Got a lift in a mint one owner 94 2.0Vi Renault Safrane today. Beautiful quiet and immaculate car with 80,000 miles and 8 months MOT. Owner has just bought a new Laguna and is collecting on Monday. Told me he was putting the car up for sale next week at £450 (the original trade in price). Very tempted, car has FSH and hasn't a scratch on it. Am I mad to consider this one owner car?

At £450, no.

It'll need a cam belt if it hasn't had one recently, and the usual maintenance, but if it's in good nick, it won't be as bad as their reputation.

I wouldn't pay proper money for it, of course, but if you want a cheap luxobarge (with more barge than lux) it's worth the cash and not much more liekly to go wrong than a same age Laguna.

Admittedly that's quite likely but it's cheap enough to be worth a punt.

£450 might not be much for a motor, but it is old, it is a barge and it doesn't seem to have been doing much - 80k over 10 years is low miles.

If street cred matters then the Safrane doesn't. I'm sure I read somewhere that, in addition to the Great Wall of China, astronauts can also make out the great stockpile of the Sahara, which is where all the unsold Renaul Safranes, Peugeot 605s and Citroen XMs ended up...

At £450 for 8 months driving, that's less than £60 per month if it dies at the end of the MOT.

I'll bet that many more of you are paying a bucketload more than that just to keep up with the Joneses.

Go for it.

My mum's brother has a Safrane - 2.2 M reg with all the toys 140,000 trouble free miles (which is unusual for a Renault!).

Big car with fine ride.

Hard to see much downside at that price.

As long as you know what you are getting. That's a car with no image. It's never going to be a classic. It won't impress anybody.

One reason it is so cheap is because it's a large car which is not not a 'premium brand'. See also Nissan QX, Toyota Camry etc.

If you want a large cheap a-b car it's great. If you want people to say 'wow' and point as you waft by it's not worth a penny.

Hopefully it also won't impress potential thieves, or even so-called joy-riders. You can treat yourself to the occasional smug glance at posher cars, reminding yourself how much more likely they are to return to their parked pride-and-joy only to find it gone

Despite peoples comments above I still reckon it's a good buy at £450. Not everyone is status or badge conscious...

Bought for £370 from garage. Brilliant car. I'm delighted!

I think the posts above were unanimously in favour Smokie. A couple of people mentioned that Dodo shouldn't be under any illusions about the cars standing in the golf club amongst the XL5 set.

Congrats Dodo. As chips.

Hehe funny to see this post.

My ex-boss just brought one of these used after he wrote off his ex-black cab. He has had sooooo much trouble with it!

He has owned the thing 3 weeks and ive only seen it in the car park twice!

Its needed a new clutch, new cam belt and the valve timing was out too. Also there have been several other niggles.

Was funny the other night as he had just been sarcastic to a lot of the staff and he went to start his car and the battery was flat - needless to say no one had a set of jump leads! ;D
