Although I imagine this might be common in other parts of the country, I have noticed a local driving school using an MG4. I was a bit surprised at first but then it made perfect sense. The majority of new cars are now automatic and many young drivers will never drive a manual and may even be looking at an EV as their first car. Also cheap running costs for the school as driving school cars don't do huge daily mileages and a lot of it is in towns so ideal EV territory.

I’ve been thinking of a wee career change and becoming a driving instructor. I was a depot trainer with a large national bus company for many years, but I’ve left due to poor staff treatment and moved to a more relaxed coach firm and now I quite fancy becoming a driving instructor and although I plan on buying a manual supermini (used Mazda 2/Suzuki Swift/Fiesta 1.25) for my main working vehicle I also intend on offering EV/Auto only instruction via SWMBO’s Nissan Leaf, which has to be the easiest car to drive I’ve ever owned. It’s a perfect learner car.

A wee career change! I had a chuckle at that.

It's not like qualifying to teach coach drivers.

The killer is the DVSA part 3 test - very low pass rate 20 -25%

Here's the current part 3 DVSA marking sheet for the test.

Very good point.

I want my daughter 13 to get early experience in driving and I prefer if she can drive an EV, however the only organisation offering driving experience to kids only offer manual and in some cases an ICE auto.

It depends on what people can afford when they can legally drive. A lot of people will be buying cheap cars which will be manual ICE cars.

My daughter is learning now. Manual Fiesta as she will be driving a manual once she passes.

You might start out on a fairground dodgem or the golf club cart! Which reminds me I was walking on one of the many public footpaths that wander through the local golf club which I hasten to add I am not a member. In any case their was this old chap and he was escorting a lad of about nine and parked nearby was a golf cart. The lad took his drive of the tee, a very good one as it happens and then jumped into the golf cart and went off after his ball. I was amazed that granddad set off after him on foot.

Yes EV driving school a good idea, clutch control no longer a requirement and anyone in the box will do!

Driving instructor near here (one man band) has sold his Focus and is giving lessons in a Tesla Model 3. Seems to be very popular!
