I am in the process of buying a "X reg" Focus. The rep at the garage said it was a non turbo 18 diesel. However, the insurance company informs me it is a turbo variant. Can anyone enlighten as to the possiblity that Ford did install non turbo's in the early Focus'
Thanks if you can assist me.

Believe so..... 1.8 CL Diesel - I believe this to be a non-turbo model.

I thought all Focus disels were turbo - just the old one (now called TDdi) became the lower powered of two diesel models. The new one is the TDci which is far better.

As someone who has owned two Focuses and taken an interest in them since their appearence in the UK I can honestly say that I never heard of a non-turbo diesel version. And believe me, if there was you wouldn't want it because the original TDi version was sluggish enough with a turbocharger. The TDCi version however is in another league. If you can afford it, it's the one to go for. Good luck,MD.

Either check the V5 and see what it is described as or visit tinyurl.com/ahxe and just enter the vehicle registration number for a free check to see what it is listed as on the DVLA records.

I don't think Ford have churned out this diesel engine without it's Turbo for about 8 years. It will almost certainly be a TDi, maybe the salesman is trying to make sure you haven't mistaken it for a TDCi. Not that that would be an easy mistake to make!

Don't know about early ones but our 2002 CL is a Turbo (TDDi) and it goes very well.

I stand corrected.

I have just lifted a December 2000 "CAR" magazine off my desk - Haven't a clue why how it got on my desk - Leoness must have been having a read....

It lists in the "facts and figures" section at the back all the Focus models current at that time.

1.8 Zetec 1.8 TDdi - 5 Door and Estate - 90BHP
1.8 CL TDdi - 5 Door and Estate - 90BHP
1.8 LX TDdi - 5 Door and Estate - 90BHP
1.8 Ghia TDdi - 4 Door 5 Door and Estate - 90BHP

Sorry for my mis-leading earlier posting.

Nope there is no naturally aspirated diesel made for the Focus, the TDi engine (now known as the TDDi and no longer availible on the estate and hatchback version, but still availible on the 4 door saloon model) is a development of the same engine fitted to the diesel Escort, it is turbocharged and devlops about 90 BHP. Although in Europe there is also a 75 bHP varient. It was replaced in 2001/2 by the new Common Rail turbocharged TDCi unit which makes anout 100 BHP and also theres a 115 BHP version. Ive read comments on other websites that say the older engine is a bit unrefined compared to the new one , but thats to be expected as theres over a decade of development separates them. A friend of the family has a 90 bhp TDi Focus Ghia estate which he tows a 14 foot caravan with, and experiences no difficulties.

And.....before I get corrected, the old TDi (now TDDi) engine is still available in mainland Europe as a "cheaper" option in the Focus, so its still being made with the usual improvements that normally occur over the life cycle of an engine. Car supermarkets who often source their Focuses from foriegn suppliers are still importing the TDi engined Focus in quite large numbers despite it being discontinued from the mainstream UK range. I have commented in several threads about this because the cars were sourced in Cyprus and Ford UK confirmed that because Cyprus is "outside Europe" the cars warrenties are not valid, including the 12 year anti perforation warrenty. Just check to make sure the Focus you are looking at is not an import.

Thanks to all who reply to my question. Its nice to know I can get such informative responses. Cheers.

Agree that the old TDDi engine isn't as refined/quiet as some more modern examples, but in the real world I got a solid 52mpg over 85,000 miles in my old TDDi Estate - compare that to the much quieter Pug HDi Estate (also 90bhp) I now have which to date over 20,000 miles averages 46mpg.

Seems it horses for courses...

Hi,

You should really check your facts before making statements like this.

A simple seach of the Ford UK web site shows:

1.8 Duratorq TDdi 1753 cc Cylinders ? 4 in-line / Direct fuel injection with EEC V engine management system / Turbo intercooler / Oxidation catalyst / Exhaust gas recirculation 66 KW (90 PS) at 4000 min-1 (rpm) 200 Nm at 2000 min-1 (rpm)

So, it is available, still being sold and as I have one. True, it dosn't accelerate as fast as the TDci, but I can vouch for it being an excellent vehicle.

My SWMBO's 2002 Focus CL is a turbo (TDdi, not TDci). The thing that puzzles me though is that people keep saying that the TDdi is slow ?. This one goes like a rocket and if this is slow I think that the TDci must be phenomenal (not having driven one yet).

My uncle who drives a Celica says that the average TDCi Focus can give him a good run for his money on the acceleration front.

If he had to buy a family car I'm sure I know which one he would buy ;-)
