Looking for a sub £2K small automatic for a relative. We're close to bangernomics at this price I know. On my "to view" list ATM is a 04 Honda Civic with around 80K miles. Good MOT history, but I'm told that running an old Honda can be problematic because of the price of parts compared to something like a Focus.

Anyone confirm or deny?

Generally Honda parts will be more but you may never need anything other than routine service items. This end of the market will be a gamble whatever make, it's all about condition and history. £2k does not get much, even privately. Anything retail will probably be junk at this price.

In my limited experience, Honda parts are indeed more expensive than Ford, Vauxhall etc. Not quite Mazda levels, but certainly more. The Civics from around 2004 seem to be indestructible anyway, so you'll never need to buy anything!

My daughter had two used 2.0S type Civics of around 2004 vintage, which she thrashed mercilessly and put around 40k miles on every year, i serviced them myself, none of them let her down and she still runs newer Civics...aircon is the weak point on later models incl CRV.

I don't know about the auto gearboxes in these, but if these cars have been looked after reasonably then they are generally as good a bet as anything.

Check for underbody corrosion as one would with anything, and i am not sure if the smaller engines are cam chain like the 2.0 litre ones, something else to check out.

Parts wise, no more expensive than anything else for service parts friction materials etc you wouldn't be visiting the main dealer for such things.

Thanks for the responses. I take the point about the risks of buying at these prices but needs must, and the opportunity to see VOSA records is a help.

If the testers have been thorough the online MoT history will warn about corrosion well before you need to worry seriously about it.

It can be quite shocking how rusty some subframes etc can be before they start getting noted on MOT's, i'm mentioning this because a good blast over the underside with chain lube or similar could make all the difference how long the car can last.

The days of cheaper spares for run of the mill cars from Ford , Vauxhall Peugeot etc , are long gone . It’s often cheaper to get parts for Mercedes, BMW , and others

If only spending £2k on the car, I'd be far more interested in the condition of the car than the cost of spare parts. That budget is pretty near the bottom of the barrel and finding a car worth buying is going to come down largely to how well previous owners have looked after it.

Also with that budget in mind, I'd assume you won't be wanting to travel very far for a potential buy, so it is also going to depend on what there is locally.

<< It can be quite shocking how rusty some subframes etc can be before they start getting noted on MOT's. >>

Indeed. But if a subframe gets seriously corroded the points it is attached to will probably be worse ?

Not always, bodyshells are pretty well sealed and protected, PSA cars from the 80's onwards have proved to be among the most rust resistant, its where wheelarches meet sills and such water trap points where shells usually start to corrode, particularly if the owner is typical in that they never give the undersides a moments consideration and wouldn't dream of washing the accumulated salt laden filth out once in a while, which bakes in hard during hot spells and eats the car away.

Sadly when it comes down to subframes suspension parts even full ladder chassis, if they get any more than a coat of black paint that's about the end of it, particularly poor at welds folds and seams, if hollow little gets inside, often there are sections presumably where the spray missed or whatever was supporting the part during dipping that sees no paint at all, even brand new vehicles showing areas of subframe and suspension/ axle rust already established before even arriving at the supplying dealer.
