Turn the engine off?

Sorry, that was pathetic.

Short of adding an underbelly tray (as found on modern diesels) and some underbonnet insulation (be careful, fire risk) there isn't a great deal you can do.

I'm assuming 1.8 diesel, mid 1990s?

It's not just a case of a bit of felt with these. The engine itself was never the most smooth and quiet. Add that to a fairly basic/small car as in the Fiesta and Escort...well I always say they feel as if the engine is on your lap.

The answer must take in the engine design itself, engine mounting, bodyshell strength and soundproofing....Ford never got it sorted in all the years they used that engine.

Either accept it for what it is or buy nearly any Cit/Pug with the XUD engine.

Underbonnet insulation is a must.
One of our fleet Escorts had the bonnet replaced a while back and the regular driver complained about the engine being damaged during it's time in the body shop. The panel beater hadn't replaced the insulation !

Try mixing 1 part vegetable oil to two parts diesel, then 10% white spirit (Wilkos) of the volume of oil. You will be amazed how this gets rid of the rattle/clatter. The vegoil ignites earlier, but burns slower, rather than a fast violent explosion that shock loads the piston.
