One of my neighbour's cars is a 2003 Golf 150 TDI and just hit 270,000 miles. Still goes well, recently had a new sensor as it was down on power but normal performance restored. I was amazed to learn it's still on the original clutch. Must be some kind of record. Can anyone beat that?

That's good going! I once had a volvo 940 that got to 190k before it died ( heater matrix, exhaust and in tank fuel pump all died on the same day!).

I recall ICL (computers) had a car that did something like a twice weekly return trip from Stevenage to somewhere in the North-West, to transfer data (probably by floppy disc). That car did stellar mileage on original engine, clutch, brakes and tyres, as it was cruising most of the time on the M1 and M6 (back in the day when you could!).

Just remembered, a friend has a civic diesel that's done 205k, engine sounds sweet as a nut, rest of the car leaves a lot to be desired, he treats it like a skip and car cleaning is not his number one pastime.

400K miles and the car does not look like a tip - it looks fresh out of the showroom!

The Audi Club bought a 2003 A4 1.9 Tdi with 530 k for £200 and were amazed to find very little rust and an original exhaust date stamped 2003.

The clue to its long life was regular servicing.

Can someone post the link for me please .

So there’s hope for my A4 which has only 170 k

My cousin bought an Alfa 156 Sportwagon 1.9JTD with 180K on the clock, for £750. Took it to 330K without serious issue, servicing it himself. He changed the drive shaft around then as it had some play from sheer age and wear. Then sold it on for £200. it's still taxed and MOTd.

If I recall a previous similar thread I posted on, I remember a minicab ride I took about 15 years ago in a Pug 406 diesel that had done 400k+.

All sound like consumables to me, but perhaps the rest of it wasn’t, worth saving.
