Hi Folks,
I have a Pug 305 Dturbo with 140k. The engine seems to have a developed a strange sound when started from cold. It's hard to describe the sound but it sounds like a dry bearing (squeal with slight rattle?) and it dissappears once the engine is running for two minutes or more. It is definitely not the altenator belt. There is no smoke from teh engine when this is happening. The engine pulls like a train and is not burning oil.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Why do you say not the aux' belt?
The belt and its tensioner are common causes of this noise.
Others are the alternator itself and the timing belt/tensioner.
One you don't want to know about is a poor oil feed to a camshaft bearing!

M.M,
Your last suggestion (camshaft bearing) is probably the one knowing my luck!!
I have tried varying the electrical load on the alternator but this had no effect on the noise.
The timing belt and tensioner were replaced two months ago.
Thanks

Martin,
If you want to sort this one day remove the aux' belt before starting the car.
If the noise goes it has to be the belt, tensioner or alternator. They really can make a mechanical type chatter if the belt is loose or old. If it was fitted too tight it could have seen off the tensioner.
If you still have the noise I would worry next about the timing belt/tensioner. Belt too loose perhaps?
The camshaft oil feed was a possible but very unlikely one!

M.M,
Many thanks for your help. I have just taken off the aux belt and the rattle is still there. So, the odds are that the timing belt may be loose.
So, I'm off to hassle the garage that fitted the timing belt for me.
Thanks again

Are you going to drive to the garage?
