Vauxhall Agila B 2009 1.2 petrol automatic - John Boy

This car has a torque convertor auto. It belongs to one of my daughters, although I have an almost identical one. It has begun to often need a touch of accelerator before it will move off on a flat road after she has started the engine and released the brake pedal.

Any ideas please anyone?

Does it have auto hold parking brake? If so that's the way it's meant to work - it may be possible to turn the auto hold off.

No it doesn't have that facility.

EDIT - It doesn't have an auto hold parking brake.

It’s possible that this is an engine fault rather than a gearbox issue. Does it feel like a misfire/stutter?

She says the engine is perfectly smooth when she's driving. It's the only car she's had, so she may never have experienced a misfire to really understand the term..

Service history? ATF level? ATF ever changed?

I suggested that a misfire is when the engine seems to miss a beat and she revealed that it feels as if the car is having palpitations (she works for the NHS!) and it also does it if she brakes and then accelerates again.

Didn't the Agila have coil pack issues? - that would feel like palpitations!

Same engine as the Corsa, so common issues with ignition components, spark plugs and coil packs .

Thank you for the suggestions so far. She lives a long way away from me, so, although I found the car for her, I've barely seen it since. This morning she said "... it happened this morning at junction, when I was ready to pull out it didn't do anything on acceleration and then when it did it kind of jumped like when you stall a manual..." That does sound like an electrical problem, so I've told her to report it to her independent garage.

"t has begun to often need a touch of accelerator before it will move off on a flat road after she has started the engine and released the brake pedal."

My Jazz CVT drives like that and has done since new. (except after it has warmed up in summer)

Are any of the brakes binding? Try stopping on a slight slope in neutral and see if it readily rolls forward having released the footbrake.

A couple of years back we had poor running on the 1.2 Corsa we used to have. I suspected coil packs were the problem and elekie kindly confirmed my suspicions when I asked for advice on here.

Unbelievably, when I took the plastic cover off and pulled out the coil packs the plugs were sitting in their recesses in water. The coil pack was showing water damage. Probably a car doing more daily miles would evaporate this off but ours was only used for short distances.

I stuck a new pack in, left the plugs, and it was good for the year before we sold it. The poor design of this engine makes coil packs a consumable. If your indie confirms this diagnosis it should not be an expensive fix.

No - although the Agila is a rebadged Suzuki Wagon/Splash, Opel engines are used.

Anyway my daughter is a single parent trying to do lots of things, so the car has only just been to the independent. The fault was really bad at the weekend, but not evident today even to the garage who drove it and inspected it from above and below. When they connected a code reader, however, it indicated a fault with sensors on the front anti-lock braking system (that's a 3rd hand description) and said to take it back if the fault returns.

UPDATE

These were the codes:

Antilock Brakes

C1022 Front Right Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction

C1026 Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction

The fault has not reappeared.

Yes, I'll do that after I check with my car as to how they should feel.
