Skoda Karoq - Skoda Karoq 1.5 TSI CO2 g/km - sniffypup

Hi,

I'm planning to retire my B6 A4 TDI with 205k and replace (probably) with a Karoq SEL 1.5 TSI with DSG, giving a higher driving position and those varioflex rear seats (my mileage pa around 10-12k at most). (Looked at the Tiguan and Q3 as alternatives but the Tig seems to have lower average mpg(?) and stretches the budget with possibly a few less bells and whistles. The the post '19 Q3 is also beyond budget.)

Not in a rush, hoping the A4 will get through the MOT next month and the current 15-20% hike in used prices will begin to ease somewhat.

Question: The 1.5 Karoqs of 2018/9 vintage have DVLA data with CO2 at around 125 / 127 g/km, but the 2020/21 cars have 150 / 156 g/km, yet the model HJ history doesn't list any engine updates. Does anyone understand why the change, especially as it seems odd to me for the CO2 to increase?

Any other advice also welcomed.

WLTP and RDE2 plus GPF introduced on MY19 cars.

The lying had to stop...

Are we talking about a new car here?. Either way, I'd be reluctant to buy a car with that 1.5TSI without knowing for a fact that its problems have definitely been fixed. Even if I did know that for a fact, I'd also be very reluctant to have it with a DSG box. Sorry!

thanks. Couldn't work out why DVLA previous records don't seem to be corrected.

From your elderly high mileage Audi I’m assuming you keep cars long term? If so I certainly wouldn’t recommend a DSG equipped VAG model to replace it. I advise a rethink.

Your comment appreciated. Is that because of the dry clutch DSG model? Would you also rule out the diesel variants (2.0L) with the wet clutch box? In all cases, it would be a 1-2yr old car with (hopefully) issues sorted.

Hi Sniffy,

Im in the same position as you.

My A4 has only 170 k but I’m in the process of getting a new air con compressor as I’m finding the cabin temperature unbearable.

Never realised how difficult it is to get the right one and not a Chinese copy.

Are you on the original clutch and what other major failures have you had ?

I too need a SUV but choosing one is a bit of a nightmare. The CX3 is too claustrophobic in my opinion. And most others are simply too big. And the old stuff like a RAV 4 are simply worn out.

Be interested in your final choice. My friend who has a 1.5 Tsi in a VW uses super unleaded to overcome the hesitation.

The Mazda CX-30 is as big as the Mazda3 (the CX-3 is about as 'big' as the Mazda2) inside the cabin, though the 3 isn't the most 'roomy' car in it's class. The CX-30 benefits from a decent sized boot compare to the 3 in hatch form. Not cheap though, especially getting it in the pokier (such a word?) 2.0 Skyactiv-X version.

The Suzuki Vitara might do (that comes with a 1.4 turbocharged petrol engine), as it's smaller in real life than it looks on photos, though in my view there are better looking cars. Not sure about what type the auto is.

Owned my A4 from new. Original CVT gearbox. Several failures, all just about ironed out now thanks to an independent garage in Hersham.

Car delivered by main agent with massive misalignment on the rear wheels, "can't find anything wrong sir". Gbox control unit failed a 90k (Audi contributed). Usual rear suspension coil spring failure. Cylinder head failure (oh so lucky not to wreck the engine). Outside temp indication failure (main agent had the car three weeks until I mentioned the second sensor on this model). Dual mass flywheel failure. Wipers became seized in armatures during lockdown. Plus other minor / usual stuff. Predict the next issue will be steering / suspension arm bushes. Serviced for too long at a main agent that issued advisories that in my opinion were to generate business eg "ARB has corrosion".

I've driven a friends Karoq (1.5 TSI) quite a few miles and very content with it, despite the obvious differences with engine characteristics. No hesitation of significance.

Looking for the extra driving height, decent headlights, decent load carrying, reliability, reasonable performance and economy. Prefer VAG especially as the local garage specialises, but may be forced to look at other alternatives.

Interesting.
What sort of mileage did the DMF fail and is your Aircon still working.
Been looking for a Rav 4 for ages but they all seem to suffer from rust problems when you check them on MOT advisories.
Would love one with a spare wheel on the back and sunroof but these are getting on a bit now.
The Suzuki seems a good bet as it comes highly recommended by Eleki doc who most on this site will know for his amazing technical knowledge . I

Aircon working and reasonably effective (fingers crossed) although one of the motors altering the air / demist vents failed (say around 180k). That was dangerous as the windscreen wouldn't keep clear properly (reminded me of late 40s motoring!).

DMF (guessing) around 150k - symptom was slightly difficult starting and the cause identified by the local garage while the car was on the ramp for other work.

Btw, add to the list a replacement front wheel bearing (as the original started to get a tad noisy).

The may finally have sorted it and yes the wet clutch version is more robust but I still wouldn’t trust one long term. I’d offload before any manufacturer backed warranty ended but you could factor in extending this. I wouldn’t run it beyond this however. Twin clutch automated manual gearboxes have a poor reputation and the costs involved in rectifying problems usually involves the car being written-off. I’d stick with a proven torque converter transmission as used by Mazda or Toyota’s CVT.
