Toyota - Buying Japanese imports - movilogo

What I should be aware of if want to purchase Japanese imports?

I am thinking of Toyota Estima/Alphard, Nissan Elgrand or similar vehicle.

I understand they are over 10 years old but banking on Japanese reliability.

These are have all creature comforts and good base vehicle for campervan conversion later.

I asked Toyota UK if their dealers will service/repair JDM (Japan Domestic Market imports) and their answer is no official support but it is up to individual dealers to decide whether to entertain me or not.

So I am assuming I shall have to rely on indie garages.

Anything to be specially aware of? Like avoid specific models?

I am not sure whether to avoid hybrids or not. Petrol only models are not only cheaper (bit older too) but fewer things to go wrong.

On a separate note, it is a shame that these models are not sold in UK market by their makers.

Maybe look into whether or not forums exist for JDM imports?. I don't think you'll have much difficulty obtaining parts for the cars you mention, they are popular and pretty common now in the UK, so JDM import specialists will most likely have standard servicing parts in stock. Also, bear in mind that while the specific models you are looking at were not officially sold in the UK, other Toyota`s or Nissan`s which were sold in the UK may use the same engine/gearbox. Other, non servicing parts will be available, but you may have a bit of a wait for it to arrive from Japan!.

Buy from a well regarded (look at reviews) JDM specialist as they will have done anything needed, such as fitting a rear foglight, undersealing, etc before selling it to you.

Your questions regarding hybrids or specific models to avoid are something a good JDM import specialist should be able to help with, without trying to `sell` you something they already have in stock. Hence, look at places with good reviews, and read through those reviews thoroughly.

I am a long time owner of an imported MkII V6 3 litre Estima...purchased 5 years ago.

I have no knowledge of hybrids

There is generally little to be concerned about tbh...they are usually utterly reliable, well built and have all the bells and whistles you could want.

I have never had any problems at all in sourcing parts..though in truth they've only been service parts as nowt else has gone wrong.

You'll feel as though you are driving your lounge around.!..so smooth...so comfortable.

I bought mine from a very reputable dealer/importer in Stockport who has excellent customer reviews (their service was superb) and I have never regretted the purchase for one minute...it has simply been, and continues to be, a superb vehicle.

Mine was fully undersealed as part of the deal...plus a no advisory 12 month MOT, cam belt change, iridium plugs and an oil/filter service

They are usually free of rust and you'll feel like you are buying a much newer vehicle.

Go have a look at one and my guess is you'll be smitten.!!..be that an Estima or an Alphard. (the Alphard would be slightly better for campervan conversion)

You get a lot of bangs for your buck.!
