I asked for a speed awareness course but have been given three points and a fine - what can I do?

I was caught doing 35mph in a 3mph zone. I opted to take the speed awareness course but have received letter stating I have to pay a fine of £100 pounds and get 3 points on my license. Why was the speed awareness course offered in the first place?

Although the use of speed awareness courses varies between constabularies, it is typically offered as an alternative to points and a fine, so if you opted to take the speed awareness course we would not expect points and a fine to be issued. It may be that there was some form of administrative error during the process - typically the offer of a speed awareness course is time-limited, so if a response had not been received within the timeframe a fine would be issued automatically. We would suggest going back through any paperwork you have and contacting the constabulary to see if the situation can be resolved.

If I get a fixed penalty abroad, i.e. in Spain for 150 Euros for 68kmh in a 60kmh limit, are the points put on my UK licence? I assume I would need to tell my UK insurer.
