Volkswagen Phaeton 3 litre Auto - A sensible buy ? - Steveieb

My son is interested in a 16 plate Diesel Phaeton.

Grateful your opinions especially about the auto box. Would this be a DSG ?

Great car.

Not a sensible used buy. Especially if you are motoring on a budget.

It's too complicated by half with some repairs only possible at a main dealer with parts needing to be electronically matched to the car.

Other parts - like brake disks are going to be inflated. For example £163 for the Phaeton from Eurocar Parts compared to £41 for a Diesel Golf from the same year. Image what dealer prices on those would be!

Phaeton has a conventional torque converter /planetary gears type with Tiptronic - they were sold by selected Premium VW dealers so many dealer don't have a Phaeton-trained technician.

Initial assumption would be that it has a DSG box, but according to the Autocar review i found, and at least one other source, it is a T/C auto.

As for whether or not it is a sensible buy, compared to what?. If it compared to a Range Rover, probably quite sensible, but not sure what else it would be more sensible than!. my recollection of the reviews and roadtests of the Phaeton was that it is an extremely complex car, also an extremely heavy car (i believe about a quarter of a ton heavier thanan Audi A8).

I also seem to recall it not doing very well in the JD Power survey but wouldn't swear to that.

Not sure why anyone would want one of these . Lots of far more exciting cars for the money. One of the big issues I’ve found with these , a lot of the electronics are model specific . VW have made access to the diagnostic system unique to this car , so regular Vcds/Vagcom will not work on some of the systems fitted .

One word. Brave.

Just say to your son something to the effect that the cost of repairs when they happen will be in proportion to the cost of the car when new, not what it costs secondhand.

I'm sure that it's suffered huge depreciation and sounds like a lot of car for the money - but it's a VW and someone else has had its best years.

As said, it would a very brave buy and not without immense risk of massive maintenance/repair costs...I'm a big fan of such barges but this is one I'd leave well alone.

Thanks. Everyone I'm sure he will stick to his E320 diesel after reading this.

This was Ferdinand Piech's (VW Chairman) answer to the MB 'S' class. The story goes he was so annoyed at MB's foray into his market sector that he commissioned his engineers to build the best luxury saloon car in the world. And it probably was - but only with the now legendary W12 engine. I know nothing about the diesel, but the autobox is the virtually bombproof ZF 6HP26 - as found in umpteen other high performance cars. If left alone, it almost never goes wrong. (unlike MB's efforts in making its own box rather than sourcing from the experts - it had an unfortunate tendency to mix the oil with the coolant).

Nothing to do with the MB box design - it was the ATF cooler which could suffer from splitting (cost-cutting during the infamous Chrysler period). MB consistently produce high quality in-house designed/built auto-boxes.

I would have thought that whether or not to cool the ATF and, if so, how to do it would form part of the overall gearbox design brief. Admittedly the duff Valeo rad problem was long ago but this, together with their prematurely rusting cars, had a lasting effect on MB's reputation.

I think I would go with a similar size, spec and performance Merc or BMW.

Not because they are necessarily going to be any more reliable, but there are likely to be far more independant specialists out there, and a far more extensive sources of s/h and pattern parts. Avoiding main dealer spares prices and labour rates will save £££ in ownership costs.
