Ok I have a couple.

Working from home I'm saving loads not buying petrol to commute.

People are looking out for each other a bit more...hopefully.

The dog is getting one walk a day, whether he wants it or not.

Spending time with your loved ones..or the wife ....boom boom.

Stir crazy....any one else found some good things?

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Random

So your dog got no walks before?

Plenty of time to catch up on gardening and general tidying. We're great at accumulating stuff.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Ethan Edwards

Not from me during the week, I'm at work and get home late. He isn't keen on walking late. Prefers daylight. My wife had been taking him. I go a bit further with him. So he gets more exercise., so do I Win win

Every cloud has a silver lining, it seems.

On our daily walk yesterday evening SWMBO and I noticed how much quieter it is here in suburbia with the reduction in traffic. The air smelt nicer too - perhaps because of less pollution.

The backlog of jobs in the house and garden is getting shorter.

Provided we don't get ill, the next few weeks may represent a net gain overall.

I think there will be some very divergent experiences.

The fortunate will have their income largely unaffected, a comfortable house, some outside space, and the opportunity to do all those things which have taken second place during "normality" - gardening, diy, reading, arts and crafts etc.

The other side of the coin are those who happen to live in a small property, no outside space (flat?), worry about job and money. THat would be tough!

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Random

Tough for self employed sole traders like gardeners, mobile hair dressers/beauticians, window cleaners etc.

You'd better fill your boots.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - 57Rebel

Petrol is cheaper now than it's been for years.

Pity I can't afford any as I've spent all my money on bog rolls!

I think there will be some very divergent experiences.

For SWMBO and me our semi-isolated existence is little changed, except for visits to/from our daughter's family who live 25 miles away. I still walk a quarter-mile to get the paper, but that became more awkward today because Morrisons had a bouncer on the entrance forcing people to queue outside - which is fine today, but could become uncomfortable in the wet.

The patio and furniture have been benefiting from attention, but that won't take much longer. Maybe I should read all those unread books. Library closed last Friday until end of April.

"... the next few weeks may represent a net gain overall."

A footnote to my previous post: I must apologise for seeming so self-satisfied.

I do realise that, while my age puts me in an at-risk category, my pension etc. means I am insulated from the awful economic fall-out that some people are experiencing, particularly the workers in the so-called gig economy.

I guess, like many of us, I am pretty terrified about what's happening and just looking for anything that will balance that.

AQI was around 150 (RED, UNHEALTHY) in Kaoshiung, Taiwan's second city. most of Sunday.

Since muck output was way down in “The land of Mordor, where the shadows lie” that rather undermines the popular and convenient untruth that most of it comes from Mainland China.

Masks have limited effectiveness against the virus but they do confer some protection against particulate air pollution, so I wear a mask routinely.

A positive in the current crisis is I don’t have to constantly respond to “Do you have a cold” enquiries from blissfully unaware Taiwanese “fresh air fiends” when the local AQI is over 150 (RED UNHEALTHY) and all the doors and windows are open.

A negative (every cloud has a sooty lining) is that they now maybe have a reason to have all the doors and windows open.

When this is all over, I bet a lot of employers will wonder if they needed so many employees in the first place...

The latest is you can go out to work if you cannot work at home. So painters, decorators, gardeners etc. can still work. Absolutely no need for window cleaners (if just cleaning outside) or gardeners to have any contact with their clients. Great for those professions to get exercise at work then come and walk dog for more activity.

Great thread just what we need. I once read on here someone saying they were simply driving in the sunshine listening to the Temptations and thinking "life's great". I could relate 100%.

Just had an open hernia op so signed off for 6 weeks Mother in law just had a stroke 100 miles away. No need to endure the hassle of getting time off plus either sitting in the car, hospital or in laws house gives me a sit down without being tempted to do stuff. Their house is converted so easier for me. MIL is a lot better and managing at home'

Whilst the family have been useless the stroke nurses have been absolutely fantastic and unknown neighbours have left food etc outside their house. What lovely people.

I live near the sea and watch the sun shine on it every day when not at in laws.

I have witnessed so much positivity that I deliberately do not tune in to watch the constantly depressing news. I know the score. I read uplifting threads like these.

The good things, on a personal note.
Now that India is in lockdown, I've noticed the 3 or 4 phone calls I get per day such as:
This in Microsoft, there is a problem with your computer, or
Your bank account has just paid £100 to PayPal, or
Your television service contract, we can save you money,
Ditto, washing machine, ditto fridge.
All of these con artist calls have suddenly stopped.

All sport leaves me cold, I am not missing at all the lack of football, rugby, formula 1, the olympics, the boat race, horse racing on the television.

Another handy recent invention is the contactless card, which means you don't handle money or touch a keypad for small purchases. And people really can't complain about not keeping in touch, with the internet offering all kinds of methods.

Visits to a dentist or hairdresser may become steadily more necessary ....

Funny you should say that I did suggest to my wife that I may see if there are any youtube hair dressing instruction vids I am sure the swear filter would delete her reply.

Now dentistry let me think, I have a dremmel and mole grips so not necessarily out of the question.

Learned how to clay bar the car yesterday or should I say not to clay bar the car.

Much as I like my home, spending 24 hours a day here is most definitely not good and while I have always been able to work from home I hate doing so so don’t. It will be interesting to see if those who are office based and had been asking to wfh will be quite so enamoured at the end of this. In reality my experience shows that most people like the option to wfh a few days a week but don’t like doing so full time,

Some of the contents of an ancient bottle of TurtleWax which has been lurking at the back of the garage cabinet next to its old close friend, a can of Graco Sprazon belt dressing, has been vigorously applied to the Audi A8 and TR7. They haven't looked so shiny in years! When my shoulders feel a bit better our Peugeot 2008, which has only ever had a plain water rinse since new in October, will get similar TLC, although it doesn't really need it.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Dag Hammar

Two good things from my perspective.

1. I got my bicycle out the other day and went for a short ride using up my ‘one’ daily exercise allowance. Great to be on the road with so little motor traffic.

2. Sitting at home enjoying the peace and appreciating the vastly reduced number of delivery vans noisily coming past my house and then back again (I live in a lengthy cul de sac )

And no, I am not responsible for part of No 2 as I don’t spend my hours shopping online.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - nick62

I work from home when I'm not on-site.

Only difference is as it's my own company and 90% of the work in the last 12 months has come from mainland Europe, I now have no income.

I love working at home - more relaxing, can get more done, no need for 2 hours commute, can have lunch when you want and cook it, more comfy chairs, can be in for deliveries...what's not to like?

Assuming the current crisis lasts for at least 3 months, and quite possibly 12 month or more, there will (almost certainly) be a radical change in behaviours. Not for everyone, but the direction of travel is clear.

Work from home will not appeal to all - particularly those with small homes and young families. But for many (companies and individuals) the realisation that it is quite feasible, possibly even more productive, will lead to a step change:

  • reduced commuting - time, congestion (rail, road and buses)
  • communications and IT will rapidly fill most gaps in functionality
  • possibly local work units (in every street?) for those whose homes are unsuitable
  • going to the "office" will be once or twice a week event

This is but a small subset of potentially changed behaviours - eg

  • major increase in online shopping - 5 years change happening in a few months.
  • increased social cohesion - communities beome more important
  • we realise we don't need to fly everywhere
  • friends and relationships become more important than money
  • realisation that the car is far less important than we currently think

And this will have impacts on the jobs people do, unemployment, property market (commercial and domestic), retail, pubs and restaurants etc.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Andrew-T

<< reduced commuting - time, congestion (rail, road and buses) >>

So we may not need HS2 .... that £100 billion will be more useful elsewhere !! Almost anywhere else ...

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Ethan Edwards

Mothballing HS2 and Crossrail for a couple of years. Using the cash elsewhere. Yep That could be a positive.

Only most studies show it’s not more productive, many large US firms were putting employees back in offices before this. In the main, we are by nature social beings and wfh is not a healthy way to live.

Probably why I like it then - am not a social being by nature and find working from home much easier and can do more.

We already didn't go out to pubs and restaurants very much, I would say once evry couple of months.

Our local pub, (which is a "Hungry Horse" is only really fit for the "Jumbo Cod and chips" everything else appears to be precooked and microwaved.

Can't get to Frinton on sea for some really good fish and chips.

Youngrovergirl is a fab cook anyway.

But I agree that in the hard times which are surely coming an awful lot of "discretionary spending" will fall by the wayside.

This years class reunion in Budapest, cancelled, Hotel was charging 300 euros a night, air fares were about £200 each, Luckily had booked a rate with free cancellation and had not booked air tickets.

Easter trip to Lisbon had not yet booked..

I suspect I won't be the only one...........

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Terry W

Getting this back to the top of the list.

There must be MORE good or positive outcomes.

It's obviously c**p for some - financial, health, reationships, family etc - but burying ourselves in the depths of despair is, frankly, pointless.

Wife currently afflicted. Me a vulnerable person (apparently).

BUT THINK POSITIVE. NEGATIVITY DOES NOT HELP. BE POSITIVE.

I've saved 380 miles this week not commuting. OK the car is fairly good on petrol, around 50mpg but week on week including reduced depreciation and tyre wear etc I'm on to a winner!

Also realise I've not used my credit card for anything, wearing plain top and old trousers so my wardrobe is staying fresh, extra 2 hours a day at home ... winning all the way. Had a couple of Skype calls to the boss, lots of emails and online work, boss is happy, working from his home too. I for one don't want to go back to full time working in the office, perhaps 3 days in and 2 days at home will be good. Of course with the lockdown my daily footsteps has plummeted, the risk is whether my clothes will fit me when it is lifted. Being NHS shielded I'm not even allowed to go to the local shop to buy milk, but it is for the right reason and good on them for what they are doing.

Just another 11 weeks to go!

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Old.Roverboy

I now teach English online and the first thing I've been doing in class is to ask my students, in groups, with me out of the "room", to think of all the positive things happening and how people are adapting to the new reality. They all come up with a good long list.
I live in a neighbourhood of about 5000 people up a hill on the edge of a city. I hardly used my car before with the brilliant public transport here, but my travel now is limited to the local shops, which I have been using once or twice a week. Plenty of provisions and no panic buying at all. ("This is a local shop, for local people", etc...) I can see my hitherto workplace from my veranda, an 8 minute walk down the hill in normal circumstances.
I've met a really friendly butcher and greengrocer and when this is all over I will make much more use of local shops; I've come to the conclusion that I only really went to the hypermarket about 2 miles away because I have a car!
Contactless card payment is becoming the new normal in Spain (at last!) and online language classes seem to be taking off, and this will become a big thing in the coming months and years (again - at last!) A lot of older technophobes are losing fear of video chat, online learning and shopping, and new types of social contact are opening up and spreading.

Coronavirus ...good things that happen as a result - Ethan Edwards

That's a good point. I've had access to Cisco Jabber for years never bothered with it. Now its become indispensable. That and Cisco Webex for meetings. I'm not too into this kind of thing, but now it let's you be at home and still answer and call out from what the other party thinks is your desk phone . That and video conferencing. It's a set of powerful tools I believe I'll continue to use after the present insanity ends.

That's been talked about for years and years, but it has needed a heavy push to persuade many to use it. It's great for 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 but doesn't work so well for groups. Now maybe we can get round to the legendary paperless office ? :-)
