It’s a 2 pedal car . He’s probably using both feet.

Don't the latest models have a one pedal driving mode if you want?

If you lift off the pedal they automatically go in to regeneration mode - i.e. they brake.

The driver may not have adapted his driving style to keep on the pedal even unless braking.

Its a well known feature with the regenerative braking on the Leaf. Depending on the mode selected (E), lifting off the "gas" pedal instantly causes the car to slow and the brake lights to come on even though the driver has not touched the brake pedal.

This effect can be turned off but presumably the driver seen by the OP either likes it that way or was unaware that he has other options. I have never driven one but I think I would prefer the mode (B) where it behaves more like a normal car.

It’s really intuitive - if the driver steps off the accelerator abruptly, it’ll give the full rate of deceleration. And if you ease off more gently, because the driver is anticipating what’s ahead, it’ll decelerate more gently. You have to be aware that even when descending a very steep hill if you stay off the accelerator the car will come to a stop and stay there. It’ll even give you a smooth ‘chauffeur’s stop’.
There is obviously a brake pedal if needed.

But you get pretty close to that behaviour with conventional brakes.

Tends to be nervous drivers, I'd guess.

I used to find they were mostly "old f***s" ,but now I'm an "old f***" myself I don't notice that so much.

Come to think ont, it might be partly a characteristic of automatics which have less engine braking. These would be disproportionately driven by OF's in The Yook, but here in Taiwan they are driven by almost everyone apart from me, possibly reducing any differential OF effect..

I'd imagined the car would only slow according to the regeneration setting involved. If the battery was fully charged then either the regeneration stops or the energy goes elsewhere?

Surely the brakes are not applied? To come to a halt on a steep hill you'd need more than regeneration braking?

Some years ago, in a debate about cruise control, one participant thought the brakes were applied going down hills, to keep the speed steady.

The same effect is noticeable when drivers insist on driving in the highest gear possible for economy. Off the gas pedal to slow down for an approaching corner or hazard, the car doesn't slow down much if at all, so on the brake pedal for some comfort braking, then back on the gas pedal until the next time - rinse and repeat ad infinitum.
