Conflicting Motorway Signage - Christopher C Parish

Today on the M25 I went under a gantry showing a red X over the outside lane. A mile later there was a sign saying in 800yds the outside lane would be closing. The X had already closed the lane, so what was the 800yds sign for? The lane is already closed and empty. I have noticed this type of signage a few times now as though it is normal practice.

Highway code Rule 258

Red flashing lights. If red lights flash on a signal and a red “X” is showing, you MUST NOT drive in the lane shown as closed beyond the signal. This applies until you pass another signal indicating that the lane is no longer closed, by displaying the word “End” or a speed limit sign and you are sure that it is safe to proceed.

Seeing how many ignore or worse still don't see a red X above a lane, by a mile later it would have faded from the collective memory, hence for the benefit of the lemming class further information or rather confirmation why the lane closure, info they can also ignore in their headlong rush or fail to see/compute.

I guess it is part and parcel of the smart motorway problem - people ignoring the overhead gantries.

I suspect a reminder for the muppets who ignore the red crosses.

Think about it.

You are in lane four, you pass under the X (because you didn't have prior warning of it). You should now move over. If you don't, you get a variation on 'lane closing'. What's wrong with or inconsistent about that?

The road works sign says the lane is closing in 800yds but it was actually closed a mile earlier by the red X. Its like having a 50 on the overhead sign then a mile later a sign saying that in 800yds the speed limit is 50. It's not in 800yds, i's now!
