Got my eye on this estate who is currently owned by a friend.
Like the shape and versatility.
But how do the experts ie you rate this car ?

Are you sure it's a V6 diesel? If so, it's unique as Volvo didn't fit one in the V70 range.

All the diesels in the 2nd Gen V70s (up to 2008) were inline 5-cylinder motors. There was a 4-cylinder diesel option post 2008.

There was an inline 6 petrol engine available from 2008 but I can't imagine many of those were sold in the UK compared to the 5-pot diesels and petrols.

Volvo made a V6?

I thought the only V they made was a V8 (in conjunction with Yamaha)?

V6- probably the 5 cylinder D5 which is a great engine. Auto box good , but make sure the auto gearbox oil has been changed!

Sorry I must have misunderstood the owner.
How about reliability please ?

This model/year should have a DSG auto box, which is not as smooth as a TC box. It could be costly to sort out if it fails after high mileage / lot of use. A friend has an 05 model (5cyl Ford diesel) with DSG auto box, which has been excellent but has only done <50k mls.

Depends on what it is going to cost you and how it has been looked after etc.

Surely not. It would be what Volvo call the Geartronic box which is and has always been a torque converter box.

And yes, the engine is the D5 in line 5 cylinder, 2.4 litre, smooth and torquey.

They’ve got a good reputation but in my view this is unjustified and based on much older volvos.

Case in point, look here under ‘what to look out for’ The D5 gets a lot of mentions!

Pedantic point of history: Volvo did fit V6 engines to some of their cars until the late 1990's. This was an engine jointly developed with Renault and Peugeot.

Anyway, this engine was gone by the time the V70 appeared.

I had one for a while, pretty reliable and very comfortable. The biggest problem was the huge turning circle of these cars makes life a bit difficult if you regularly park in tight spaces.

Wasn’t a good engine, sluggish, greedy and nowhere near as tough as Volvo’s own 4cyl motors. Weirdly the 760 was offered with the V6 and Volvo’s own 4cyl 2.3 turbo which was by far the better motor.

Interestingly the 760 diesel used a VW engine from an LT van .

The Porsche 924 also used an engine which could be found under the engine cover of a VW LT van!.

But going back to the PRV V6, that engine was a very popular choice of powerplant for various mid engined kit cars back in the eighties (usually lifted from a Renault 25 i seem to remember). It was of course also used in the ill fated DeLorean........

really surprised by the list of problem areas for the V70 listed in the car by car guide.
I was always under the impression that these were well built cars giving little trouble !

Well we have a S60 petrol auto from 2005 and it has been fantastic, now at 120k miles and still looks great. Not a single serious failure, the seats are still better than anything ANYONE including VOLVO make nowadays and are barely worn, the leather is still immaculate.

Now the suspension is no longer in the best of health so the ride is pretty awful but eh the seats are fabulous.

Did I mention the seats?? They are good too.

They're good old buses - get a decent one and they are a fine prospect.

However, cut it a bit of slack, it's 15 years old and presumably not costing a fortune so if you're expecting zero issues then be realistic.

They're heavy at the front so quite heavy on suspension parts. A 2005 will have had most of the issues of previous model years ironed out. If it is an auto just check it works correctly when warm.

I'm guessing it would be a E4 185bhp model with the slightly later engine which is OK. Swirl flap linkages usually break but not an issue if you don't fix it.

Check CD player works. Stereo is fabulous if an SE. Great seats, good long distance car.
