Daihatsu Skywing, probably - Two different drive shaft greases? - edlithgow

Been checking my probably-relevant Daihatsu manual collection and they all seem to agree that there are two greases for the driveshaft joints.

Yellow stuff for the inner, black stuff for the outer.

I'd bet A LOT of money that no one in the Taiwan motor trade will give a seconds thought to such servicing sophistry.

If they've heard of grease at all, they'll be firmly of the "grease is grease" tendency, and it'll be the WRONG grease too.

Any idea what the difference might be? I have some UK-bought Comma moly grease that should do for the outer, but no candidates for the yellow stuff.

Hoping to avoid further dismantling this time around but future purchase in Japan or the UK might be possible.

Different temperature ratings? Unless grease has viscosity ratings but I can't see how that would work

He says the black molybdenum grease is essential for the outer joints, but should be OK for the inners too.

Probably the yellow for the inners may be the bulk chassis grease, whereas moly grease may be bought in smaller quantities and thus more costly.

(He started as an apprentice mechanic on Morris Minors, so been in the business a lot of years, been on all the update courses, so pretty reliable and knowledgeable)

I dunno much about greases, and AFAIK no widely recognized international brands are available here, though I did get some 3M pink stuff that no one has ever heard of, but which I now think isn't fake.

The only possibly relevant variables I can remember are molybdenum content (high molybdenum not advised for wheel roller bearings because it can make them skid) and filler (bentonite/clay used in some chassis grease can cause abrasion in moving parts).

I dunno if the inner grease comes in contact with roller bearings (will have a look for diagrams), but if it does that MIGHT be an explanation.

Probably a cheaper type of grease the yellow, and better graphite grease for the outer joint as it does more work, cant say for sure but I think that's the case, I think the colours refer to the application its used for,

I know not many use the original grease in certain cars for CVJs and use the common graphite grease which should last for life of the joint barring dirt/water getting in past the boots, never studied greases so not certain, I`ve always used the grease that came with the new part

OP ignored my last post regarding how to set up ignition timing. It is possible that the different grade of grease for the outer joints is because they are subject to severe wheel movement (suspension) whereas the inners only rotate and move with the (suspended) car.

Exactly so, the outers have to cope with steering movement, full power on full lock being the most severe stress. Moly grease should be fine for the inners. The pink stuff Ed refers to could be 'kind to rubber seals' brake grease?

A reasonable speculation, but it would be nice to actually know.

Not that it (or ignition timing, for that matter) has much to do with this topic, but I have never seen any brake grease in Taiwan, and I don't believe there is any. .

The 3M pink stuff I have appears to be "standard "lithium base EP bearing grease

Probably not fake, but it didn't appear on the global website and US contacts in the industry had never heard of it. Odd.

I sent an email to 3M asking about it, and, after a couple of months, they did reply, but in Chinese, and I never got around to getting it translated.
