Toyota Prius - The next target for thieves? - focussed

Not in the UK I know, but a lot of bad habits seem to migrate across the pond eventually.

A lady in San Francisco went to her car after it had been parked overnight to find that thieves had removed the $10.000 traction battery through the back window. All 180 pounds of it.

In Prius hybrid cars, the battery is located under the backseat. Its location makes it hard to remove, as does its size.

"We looked it up and the battery weighs 180 pounds," Marjory Kaplan told KTVU. "We were completely amazed. I couldn't lift 180 pounds. I don't weigh 180 pounds."

"

Thieves allegedly extract 180-pound battery from Prius "

"allegedy" because it is NOT - repeat NOT_ a 5 minute job. LOTS of dismantling required. The battery is only removed after removing carpets and lots of trim and wiring.. using specialist equipment to prevent high voltage shock which can be fatal...

I suspect an insurance scam...

Nothing unusual about thieves stealing expensive car parts. What is unusual is that they didn't take the entire car, strip it at their leisure and then dump the shell.
