BMW 3 Series 318d - 318d 2010 replacement water pump, engine damage? - Oliver Brady

My car is getting a new water pump. The mechanic says i should get rid of the car, the engine is running fine but as i ran it on low coolant for a few days, he thinks the engine might be troublesome down the line, though no overheating light came on.

Any opinions on whether he could be right?

Thanks

Is that a guess from your mechanic ? I would get the pump and coolant renewed and go from there. It really depends how much coolant has been lost and how far it has been driven in this condition.

The mechanic is probably going on experience. Old BMW diesels have a poor reputation for reliability and as yours is currently 9yrs old and probably approaching a six figure mileage he’s advising you correctly. I certainly wouldn’t tell you to buy an old BMW especially a diesel.
