Anyone hired a car in Tenerife? If so do you have any tips, comments or suggestions.

Rates seem cheapest at the airport compared to our resort (Los gigantes) but would need to trig back there on public buses (getting hotel transfer).

Thanks

Its a few years since I used them, but Zest (formerly economycarhire) were always excellent. UK based broker, so any problems and you know who you are dealing with. They did include full insurance.

On my only visit to Tenerife we just called into one of the hire car shops, but it was November and very quiet so not much demand.

If you can, ditch the hotel transfer. Picking up a car at the airport will probably get you to your accommodation a lot faster.

Go for Autoreisen, which I can recommend personally, or Cicar, which seems a favourite with Trip Advisor members. Reserve in advance online. Both have desks in the airport and the cars are a short walk away.

Now, parking in Los Gigantes can be a challenge, unless your accommodation includes it. If you're prepared to walk for ten to fifteen minutes to your destination, you should find somewhere on the street (i.e. free). There's virtually never any parking anywhere near the marina, so try further inland (= uphill - yes, it's a bit steep).

P.S. I should add, do NOT be tempted by Goldcar with its low headline rates. Trading also as Rhodium, Interrent and Europcar, its reputation is awful; there's been yet more critical articles recently in the UK press.

N/A - Car hire/driving in Tenerife - Warning

I hired a car from CiCar. I was worried, as they did not answer their phones, plus did n't need to put a credit card details to reserve it, but they are a professional company. A smartly dressed man brought the car back to the hotel.

During the hire, I managed to have a minor damage, to the wing mirror, on a very narrow road and a car which was badly parked, but it was all covered under full insurance. I had to get the car changed over, as I think dust got on the brakes, but they changed the car in minutes. A sign of a good company, is how they deal when things go wrong. For me it was a good experience.

To return the car, I called their office and wondered when their guy will be over to collect the car, they said leave the keys with the hotel reception. No checking! I took photos as precaution. Easy!

The car I got was 48k, but it was in good condition.

I would hire from them again.

I did not hire from the airport, as I was worried about poor roads, but the roads are generally fine, if you have Sat Nav, then you should be find be okay.

It is long drive from Los Gos Gigantes to the capital. If I had money, I would have booked a couple of night there, to save driving....

Another happy customer of Autoreisen. We used them in February and have just booked again for coming February. Easy to book online, prompt confirmation with nothing to pay until you arrive. Easy collection. Our car was a few years old but clean and perfectly fine. Drop off was also straightforward.
Driving around the island was problem free. Roads are OK. Parking can be a problem in towns.

Assuming the south airport, we've had 'Topcar' for three years now. No problems, office at airport. Office windows face both the inside concours and the outside corridor - you need to go to the outside. All the hire cars are parked in serried ranks on a large carpark opposite the main entrance. Bring back with full tank - there are fuel stations on the motorway within a few kilometres of the airport.

The roads are indeed OK.

It's only about 60 miles, and there's a motorway all the way!

Thanks for all the helpful comments. We got a VW POLO TSI looks like a 3 cylendar. Seens to have just about enough power. It's a bit sluggish setting off but ok when up to speed (not hugely different to my Mrs ecoboost Ford Focus). Economy seems pretty good on 47 mpge include lots of up and down so far.

Got it at a local place (cicar) via broker (doyoupain) which together gave a good price which included excess so probably not much more than the airport price, and I didn't need to waste 1/2 day getting there.

The roads are good. Potholes free which is a bonus compared to the UK. The main roads are very good. We took the road to the mountain (masca valley) and it was hairpin central! But great fun. The Polo handheld ok.

Overall good fun so far.

Well done for driving to Masca. It is indeed a bit hair-raising, especially when you meet a coach on a hairpin bend. But wonderful scenery.

I don't know what other excursions you have planned, but we have enjoyed going over to the north coast via Santiago del Teide (which you presumably went to, to get to Masca) to Garachico (charming town and rock pools) and Icod de los Vinos (El Drago Milenario - the supposedly thousand-year-old tree).

In a completely different direction, we found Candelaria on the east coast made a lovely day out, with the spectacular cathedral by the sea with its enormous statues

It's got to be Autoreisen who revived a 94%customer satisfaction rating in Which , No other vehicle rental company in the world achieves anything like this rating.

Thanks again for all the helpful tips. Our VW Polo was fine and averaged 47 mpg which I thought was pretty good for a petrol and considering the terrain, it is indeed a hilly volcanic island. Car returned with no problems.

The main roads and motorways are very good with a 120kph limit on a lot of it, so around 75 mph similar roads in UK might be 50 mph zones due to junctions being close together but it felt fine to me.

Side roads and B roads are also in good condition, the only speed bumps are for zebra crossing onky. That makes a great and pleasant change fron UK driving. The driving experience is overall a lot more relaxed. Maybe being on holiday is a factor but people seem a lot more relaxed behind the wheel. I had a good time and as a fellow backroomer mentioned the trip to Masca was hilarious, with 1st gear hairpins every 30 seconds or so.

Thanks again for all the advice.
