A few years ago I was looking for a Volvo estate but funds were tight due to young family and large mortgage. I found a decent one for about 8K and chatted to the salesman who showed me an 7 series estate with 165k on the clock, a few cosmetic things were showing but the bloke said they'd make them look decent if I wanted it. I took the plunge and the old petrol engine was a good 'un. What's the highest mileage you've taken a punt on?

I’ve never really owned a big miler but I’ve flogged plenty. Highest was a Toyota Carina II 2.0 XLd ex taxi with 452,000 miles that ran and drove without fault. Fella bought a very nice red 1992 Audi 100 2.0E in its place, not intending to use it as a taxi as he’d changed job.

Never particularly high, but the highest was a lovely 1990 aerodynamic Audi 100 with a solid powertrain of the 5cyl 2.0E auto, at 77,400 miles in 1993, just under 4yrs old, for £4,200 - private sale from a local building society boss. In those days (and probably still now), high mileage quality execubarges were cheap as accountants wrote them off at 25% per annum. It lasted me till 2003 and 146,000 miles when I traded it in for a 4yr old 77,000 miler A6....which lasted me 11yrs. Only major expenses were a leaky water pump (the only time I have ever had a cambelt change!) and a fractured front antiroll bar when it was around ten years old.

It was a van not a car, but a 2003 Iveco Daily with 170k when i bought it (in 2009). Didn't keep it that long as it was much more heavy duty than i needed, but i really liked it!.

I was paid for works done with a 7 yr old Merc 230 TE 123 series that had 134000 on it I ran it for 5yrs with no. Problems Finally traded it in for it's estimated worth when I got it

Bought to drive rather than bought and sold, a BMW 523 and an Audi 100CD both had over 250K miles. Got shot of the Audi after a failing power-brake issue tried to kill me a couple of times and the pump cost more than the car was worth. The BMW was reliable, Ihe guy I sold it to ran it for years with very few problems - but that was when BMW built a decent car. Modern ones are a liability used. A pal of mine a Peugeot 504 diesel which he had for 20+ years, finally failed an MOT for rust at over 450K miles, he hardly ever serviced it either!

Nothing stratospheric, mileage wise, but my 89 F reg Rover 820 Fastback showed 80k when I bought it, and it quickly became apparent that it had been clocked. To what extent I don't know, but I found concrete under the wheel arches, and just about everything electrical that could go awry went wrong in the first year of my ownership. Rust also broke out all over the show, and in response to my requests to fix all these problems, the aerosol-haired car salesman who sold it to me made the proverbial chocolate teapot look useful.The garage was Motapoint of Little Sutton; now long gone, so safe to name them.

I've bought a few around the 100k-120k mark - but only if the usual servicing has been done around that time (major service, cambelts etc.) and there's plenty of service history.

I was put off high mileage cars by my experience with a Renault Espace, which wasn’t even high mileage but it was the highest mileage car I’d ever bought - of the cars I’ve owned whose recorded mileage could be relied upon, that is.

We have four sons and by 1995 they were outgrowing the 7 seater estate car that had transported us around for the previous 4 or 5 years. We needed to graduate to a people carrier and of the limited models on the market at that time the Espace offered the best package. A new one was out of the question and then this 3 year old model came up at our local Renault dealership at a price I could just about manage on finance. It was in pretty good condition and the dealer agreed to fix the minor bodywork damage I noticed on inspection. The only drawback for me was that it had covered 54,000 miles, whereas my policy until then had been to buy 2 year old cars with around 20,000 miles on the clock.

The salesman told me when we sat down to discuss a deal his aim that I would leave the showroom having agreed to buy the car and he succeeded! What swayed the balance in spite of my reservations about the recorded mileage was the trade-in offer on my old car. It was a well-worn Renault Savannah that had completed 93,000 miles and he offered more than I was expecting so that clinched the deal.

Fairly soon after we took delivery we started to have problems with the cooling system and after several expensive visits back to the dealers at which point my patience had run out, they diagnosed a blown head gasket. I suspect that the gasket was blown when we bought the car, hence the repeated problems with the cooling system - including my wife being recovered from the M25 in mid-winter with an overheated engine and empty radiator.

Quite apart from that, at the 60,000 mile service the guy told me that we like to replace the front discs and pads at this mileage, sir. I don’t think I’d ever had brake discs replaced before so that came as a bit of a shock and made for an expensive service. Subsequently there were other repeated problems such as sensors failing and when we sold the car at 91,000 miles the heater matrix needed replacing. I was glad to get rid of it. We traded it for my first ever brand new car and I’ve always bought brand new ever since.

We have quite a lot in common, Senexdriver! Like you we have four children (two of each in our case), and we too had a Savanna followed by an Espace in the 1980s. Fortunately they were company cars and we had them from new - indeed they were nos. 4 and 5 of seven consecutive Renaults.

In those days there wasn't much choice if you had more then three chidren, and there was always a big family Renault to fit us all in. None of them gave any major trouble, even though the Espace did 125,000 miles wth us: Renaults tend to be vulnerable to neglect or abuse by previous owners but (apart from the poor ones between about 2000 and 2006) can do very well if looked after from new.

Their other problem was that they didn't hold their value - big French cars still don't - so when I changed to a new job in 2002 with a higher salary but no car, I went German.

Now, like you, we have two Audis, a Q2 with the same 2.0 TFSI petrol engine as your A4 (per the other thread) and a 1.5 TFSI A3 convertible. A Q2 or Q3 might suit you next time.

How interesting that we have so much in common, Avant.

I’m afraid that neither the Q2 or Q3 appeal to me at all. The Q2 looks too staid and boxy, although I do appreciate where the inspiration for its design came from. The Q3 is too jelly mould for my taste, although I do think the recent revised version is an improvement on its predecessor. I quite like the Q5 and it has much the same interior as my A4 Avant, but I really don’t want to spend circa £40K on a car. In my retirement I am enjoying the sort of cars I could never afford when I was younger, but there is a limit to how much I’ll spend. We’re doing just fine with our two current Audis.

Looking to the future, I have been thinking of an SUV next, anticipating reduced ability to get into a ‘normal’ car - hence the consideration of a Q5. However, as the possible date for trade-in approaches, I am not experiencing the reduced mobility I expected. I am therefore still stuck on my preferred type of car, medium to large estates. I might well hang on to the Avant if I can get a decent extended warranty (about which I had a thread a few months ago), but the other car attracting my attention - and I’m sure you’ll understand why - is the Volvo V60. It’s getting rave reviews and I do like the look of it. They have just introduced a 2 litre petrol version with 190 BHP - right up my street! I’m currently having fun with carwow dealers and some pretty attractive discounts. Any thoughts? My only reservation is Volvo’s questionable reliability, but I only have anecdotal experience to go on. Otherwise I’d love to try living with a Volvo.
