I was in the existing scheme but its being wound up and replaced with Shell Go. This offers an App option but you can still have a card which I prefer.
However in registering for a card, as well as the obvious address, they now ask for date of birth and car reg. I can't see any valid reason for either of these so I have entered fictitous ones. I am not happy at them holding uneccessary personal details.
Am I being paranoid?

I don't think you are being paranoid, I feel the same. There are loads of things I back out of for that very reason, why do they need to know? Honest Johns reliability survey was one I abandoned because of the apparently irrelevant questions that were asked about car insurance renewal for example.

They want to know as they want to know more about you and know how old a person is and what car they drive.

Alan exactly but age in years and car model as such are not too sensitive in terms of data and I wouldn't be too concerned at those. However Reg no is an uneccessary detail, while dob is an important piece of your specific means of identifying yourself. It shouldn't be gathered uneccessariily.

The fact is that Shell (or a hacker) could potentially link this data and my credit card details ( thats how I pay) to my home address (where they send my Shell card). Not altogether comfortable prospect hence my using dummy data.

It'll be interesting to see if they query the car reg as its not a valid number. If they do I will cease the application. Its a few quid benefit to me a year at most.
