MR2, mx5 - Buying convertible car - AntonioG

Hi,

I am looking for a cheap convertible car under £3k if possible

I like the MR2 Toyota MK3. But the ones I have seen so far are not very well and rust in all of them.

Can anyone give some advice on how to find a nice one? Does anyone know about someone helping buying used cars? I mean searching and helping to find the right car.

I am afraid I am not an expert in engines so not really sure what to check a part from what I can see when testing one.

Many thanks

It pays to buy privately at this money and the best small convertibles are longterm owned playthings for wealthier/older owners. You’ll often see elderly folks swanning around in mint MX5’s they’ve had for years. Rust is your biggest enemy with the MR2 and MX5 but both are a hoot to drive if you get a good one. I’d favour the Mazda and there’s far more of them around to choose from.

And make sure to avoid anything with a folding metal hardtop, such as a Peugeot 206CC.

Whilst less fun to drive and lacking interior space I would have thought a hard roof convertible would be a good choice providing the roof still works well. Something like the mitsubishi colt had the potential to be a fun summer car, still usable in bad weather. They are all so cheap at the moment that if/when the roof breaks just sell it for scrap.

I'm one of those retired people with a lovely mx5. I had it rust treated from new, and its always lived in the garage.

The folding hard top has never given me any trouble, and it meant that I could take the car to places where I've be nervous leaving a softtop.

If you don't mind age, there are several Pug 205 soft-tops to be found, preferably pre-1992 when new regs forced unfortunate changes to the fuel injection system. I've had two or three, and the better ones may well be completely free of corrosion. Sellers are starting to ask silly money though, and spring is not the best time to buy a convertible if you want a bargain.

I sold my last CTi to a chap in Wigan, who sold it on a few years later for double the money to a guy who drove it home to the French Riviera. Apparently there are almost no decent 205s left in France.

If it was £1k maybe, but not everybody can afford to write off £3k. Even if the roof works when you go and look at it, that doesn't mean it still will in 6 months. A manual, fabric soft top is the best option, followed by an electric fabric soft top. But a metal one?, there is just too much potential for it to fail spectacularly.

Even then, and i know beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder, but pretty much all the folding metal jobs, certainly on a small car, are just sooo ugly and ill proportioned!. The Colt and the Micra (IMO) are the worst offenders here.

Thanks everyone for your messages. I have seen many other convertibles but the only ones I could think of buying are mx5, MR2 and possibly mg tf. Others don't look that pretty to my eyes or are far too expensive.

Lack of space of MR2 is not a problem and I just need a weekend car so age/miles should not be a problem. But rust and oil leaks is what make me think about not buying.

If anyone knows about an MR2 for a good price I am your man :)

Any help, advice, suggestions will be very appreciated.

Thanks

No special tricks here and the only advice is to be patient and be prepared to travel. You are looking for a good car on a small budget, so you are just going to have to sift through the rubbish to find a good one. That is going to be easier with the MX5 as there are simply much more of them to choose from. But if you are really set on an MR2, see if there is a dedicated forum or owners club, as this may well have a for sale section. Plus, club members will be able to give you much more thorough info on what to look for in the car.

I too am the older bloke in the convertible, SLK in my case as my previous clk had a fabric roof which was almost impossible to keep clean. If you can find a good one then it's worth putting on your shortlist. It’s great fun in summer and the boot space ain’t too bad.

So am I. Occasionally a TR7 like mine will come up for sale - probably not as good as mine which was Ziebarted from new, but will have outlasted many an MR2/MX5. Here's one....

But John, when they were 'new' TR7s had a reputation for reliability rather like the RRs in an adjacent thread - so anyone interested must assume that all the faulty ones are long gone.

Go for an MX5. We recently bought our old one back, and you can find a reasonably priced and well maintained one for £1500. Go for the Mk2. Rust on the rear arches can be an issue, but it’s not too bad if caught early. Ours cost £250 to sort both sides. And hardtops can be had, either with the car or on eBay. We tend to take the hard top off when the clocks go forward. There’s also more headroom in the Mk2 than the Mk3. Cheap parts and easy to work on too.

Thank you.

Well, mx5 was/is an option but I like more the mr2 style really. BMW z4 and the new mx5 looks also awesome to me but prices are too high. I am looking for something cheap that I can put some extra money in and have a nice convertible car for weekends.

Thanks

How about a Bmw Z3 . ? These are within your price range and are generally not rot boxes like the Mx5 and Mr2. Only look at those with the smooth as silk 6 cylinder engine.

Don't know why but I am more confident in Toyota cars than BMW. And maintenance I guess will be more expensive.

They mostly are. The non-convertible ugly 'turret-tops' with the terrible 4 speed gearbox were badly assembled at the unhappy wind-swept salty Speke factory, where it was rumoured the rust was applied before the paint. When they brought the production line down to Canley and started building the DHC with the LT77 5 speed box it transformed the car from a bit of a joke to a well engineered sports car capable of handling the ex-Buick 3.5 V8. Unfortunately by then the pound was then so strong ($2.40ish) and its reputation so tarnished that it failed to sell abroad, so BL pulled the plug.

The rumour at the time was they were called TR7 because that was the number of cars that actually worked.

Does anyone live east-anglia and would to help with checking a car?

:)

There are a couple I would like to try but I live not close to them so I would appreciate some help or at least based on your experience what to check.

Thanks
