2003 Peugeot 307 gxl auto h/b petrol - social financial emotional affects of car repairs - robsay

Three weeks ago I had my 2003 Peugeot 307 gxl h/b petrol towed to a nearby garage because it wouldn't fire up. The garage owner replaced fuel pump and sensor in a matter of a week, car still refused to start.

The second week I telephoned, mentioned I was concerned about the repair prices. He agreed and went on to say it could be the ECU OR BCM.

I did my own research and it appears a corroded ECU on this car is a common fault due to water ingress.

After three weeks, today, I telephoned. His brother said he would call back , he didn't

Tomorrow I shall go to the garage and ask him just where are we now.

What are my legal rights? What bills am I liable for considering all he has done is replace fuel and sensor at a cost of £90.?

The garage has a right of lien against your car for the work already done on it. It is not the fault of the garage that the car has further faults. Your options are to pay the bill so far and have the car taken away, or agree with the garage to pay for further work such as sourcing a new ECU, BCM or anything else necessary with no guarantee that it will solve the problem.

I agree the garage is not responsible for diagnosing further faults. I am prepared to pay for what he's done so far but surely, 3 weeks without one call from him to keep me up to speed is unreasonable. His lack of communication, not keeping me up to speed, not making me aware of running costs is totally unfair AND has cost me.

I am prepared to pay for what he's done so far. However, surely, 3 weeks without one call from him to keep me up to speed is not unreasonable. I'm 67 today, old -fashioned maybe but I believe in treating the customer professionally and with respect. His lack of communication, not keeping me up to speed, not making me aware of running costs is totally unfair. If he is busy, good for him but I've never been so busy that I was unable to contact a customer.

It has cost me financially, socially and emotionally, I'm actually feeling angrier by the day or am I being unreasonable. In all my years of driving, 50 years, I have never experienced this before.

I've been without my car for 3 weeks going onto 4 weeks where it has been off the road, this equates to £60 unused insurance and road tax. Taxi's have cost me in the region of £90 that's £150 and it doesn't include the affect it has had on our social lives. My wife who is recovering from a serious foot operation, has had to hobble to catch buses on crutches. It's my birthday today any chance of celebrating with my wife is out of the question.

Thanks for your technical input but I'm sure I'm not on my own when I say situations like mine are not unusual and involve much more than car repairs.

The water ingress on the ECU is more of a 207 issue than the 307. In all my years of Peugeot diagnostics and owning several 307s I've never seen water ingress issues - except where the windscreen seal is poor and it runs down to the soundproofing in the engine bay.

If I were you I would find someone with the Peugeot Planet diagnostic equipment (Google "Planet Owners Map") and get some accurate diagnostics. The people who own this kit are fellow Pug owners, don't run garages and have no vested interest in making money from you - just getting you back on the road.

From there you can take that information to any garage if you're not able to do the work yourself.

As good as Solus and Snap On equipment is, they're no match for the Peugeot Planet equipment, especially at reading live data.

I hate reading stories of replacement fuel pumps, as that seems to be the first thing thrown at the car when it won't start.

Can't today's mechanics, after taking an accurate present and past mechanical history, arrive at a working diagnosis using their eyes, ears and occasionally nose these days? I presume a fuel pipe was disconnected to confirm the diagnosis of a failed petrol pump, or its blown fuse? It would be very unusual to have two immobilising faults occurring simultaneously.
