VW Golf SV - Electronic Handbrake - angelcyn

A problem has arisen regarding the electronic handbrake on my Golf SV, as I loath these handbrakes the problem is even more annoying and potentially dangerous.

Without warning when pulling away the handbrake comes back on, sometimes a quick dip of the clutch releases it other times, neutral and a dip to the floor works, this is b***** dangerous as On one occasion a car behind very nearly hit the rear of mine as it nose dived to a halt.

This fault is not appearing on a regular basis just occasionally out of the blue, it is booked in under warranty, but have others had this problem, I now hate electronic handbrakes even more than I did previously, they have no point at all other than to add to the growing list of electronic aids that can fail, and if this one fails you have a problem.

Surely your car shouldnt nose dive to a halt from an epb working on the rear wheels? Does your car have some form of automated emergency/pre-collision braking & could it be that rather than the epb?

Purely an expression, I should have said it came to a very sudden stop.

I am still interested to know if this problem has arisen with any other cars with an electronic handbrake, can't believe this is the only case ?

I agree with you on the very sudden stop part. I had a loan renault scenic and tried the electric parking brake on an empty road, couldn't believe how violent the stop was.

I suspected it had to have applied all of the brakes , but don't that it could have after reading about the set up online?

That is the only car I've driven with one and I would'nt fancy one myself. I've read about a lot of people having expensive problems with them, although I don't know anyone personally that has had a big bill.

Although the "hill hold" is I think a useful feature, the auto release of these brakes does make me think of increasing clutch wear as they fight against each other.

As other people have said, an EPB seems to be a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

The electronic brake can be used in a emergency by pasangers or in case of hidraulic brake failiure. Once you pull the button you go for a very sudden stop. You might want to check the swich as it could wet since it usualy is near the cupholders
