Interesting discussion on Radio 4 consumer programme about a guy who bought a cloned car after having it checked clear from a RAC inspection.

The VIN number from the windscreen was taken as reference but this had been swapped somehow.

The honest John vehicle check came under scrutiny in that it did not seem to offer any more security than the RAC deal.

Apparently the only real check is to couple up a simple garage laptop and read off the VIN from the ECU. Not the sort of thing most people have access to until the deal is done and at payment from a garage.

The JLR dealer who checked the car in question and gave it a clear bill of health did not realise this and relied on the fact that the windscreen was a OR part!

So good advise to all car buyers to protect themselves !

There always used to be a 2nd VIN stamped into the metal of the car in a place that was easy to find yet difficult and expensive to change without making it tampering very obvious. Normally under the drivers seat (flap of carpet lifted up) or on the scuttle under the bonnet.

I have heard that it is possible to slide a piece of paper (or similar) between the screen and the VIM plate to either cover it up (suppose it could work when a total muppet is buying) or put the desired VIN on before its slid under. but then again it might just be another urban myth.

I PX'd a car back in 1984 that was subsequently cloned. Someone (probably at the dealer) copied the chassis plate off my car and riveted it (like they were back then) onto the stolen car and simply had plates made to match. A year went by before someone spotted that there were 2 red XR3i's on the same reg living in the same town. The one I thought was my old one wasn't.

Another way is to depend on cheaper, less enviable cars without bling ....

Well, if I were to decide on a living cloning cars, I think selecting plentiful "generic" cars as the source and target would make a lot more sense in my business plan - "specialist" or exotic cars are far more likely to be bought by knowledgable car enthusiasts - definately not the sort of people I want poking around my dodgy vin plate. I'd be very surprised if I was the only person who thought like that.

Interesting story in the DMail today about folk throwing rubbish out of a parked car window. The person taking the video clearly showed the SEAT's number plate and it was easy to find it belongs to a Mitsubishi, that has no tax, insurance or MOT.

I see it's been removed from the DMail's website now.

happens a lot round my way but they usually have someone driving the motor, but try to trace it and plate has no tax ins or mot, and getting more common as people decide to use motors to dump rubbish instead of using the tip, even had large trailer with no plate on dumped on local roundabout
