Went to a main dealer today to look at a low mileage demo, 2161 miles, 11 months old...and 2nd keys and documentation/service records locked away...

Is it because of people nicking the service books and handbooks.

I'm always suspicious when I hear that the service history isn't available (or locked away in a different office etc). I would take that to mean that there isn't any service history!

In this case though, as the car is under a year old with a very low mileage, I wouldn't have expected it to have had any services anyway!

There are plenty of savvy buyers who will walk when told the records aren't available just now, "but we do have them, honest guv!" So I'm mystified why so many dealers don't have them available.

Correct. A common problem actually with dodgy traders and Joe Public alike. I’ve often found on inspection service books that don’t actually belong to the car they’re in. Faked histories is the new way for the fly guys in this trade to add value now that clocking is effectively closed off. I regularly spotted cars I looked at while sniffing round auctions that had reappeared on sale at small dealers with full stamped up service books which had either not existed or been near void of stamps when I looked at them. Even the auctions had to start hiding service books and manuals.

My local car supermarket removes the tyre inflation kits as well as all the service books and manuals. When cars had cigarette lighters they took those out as well.
