Are the early Zeta/Zetec engines found in the Mondeo and Escort, non-interference engines?

The 1.8 will suffer damage if the cam belt breaks as will the 2 litre. Not 100% sure about the 1.6 to be honest but since its the same stroke I would expect it to have clearance issues as well. Note that this is the iron Zetec not the Alloy Yamaha Sigma or alloy Mazda Duratec

Nope. But much confusion comes from the fact so many very different motors are badged as Zetec. The Mazda derived 1.8/2.0 in the Mk II Focus is non-interference but the Ford designed motor in the Mk I will be ruined.
