Any system of control requiring teh driver to look at a screen to control something in a car is inherently unsafe.. HUDs in aircraft say so.

I suspect VW will follow others with a process that prevents both drivers and their passengers from operating an infotainment screen when the vehicle is in motion?.

I don't think the problem is watching films or surfing the internet, it is adjusting the heating controls, changing the radio station, that sort of thing. There is a touch screen on our Jazz and it really is tricky trying to do these things while driving, even after more than a year. Before touch screens, these things were controlled by buttons or knobs which, with very little familiarity, could be done without taking your eyes off the road.

If you don't like touch screens (I don't) avoid any review of the Tesla 3 - the only buttons are on the huge screen on the dash.

The controls even for basic ventilation are far too involved to be used whilst actually driving.

Just as dangerous as fiddling with a mobile phone whilst driving. The old style buttons and knobs are far better.

I agree.

The reason manufacturers are moving to touchscreen is cost. Quite simply it is cheaper to use a touchscreen for control rather than have buttons.

However, you can get touchscreens that provide haptic feedback (basically a sensation of touching a push button) which are better. There are other improvements that you can make which I'd rather not go into for reasons I'd rather not say ...

I'm not a fan of touchscreens. Unless the road is very smooth, I find it difficult to tap the required point on the screen, a slight jolt at the wrong time and I frequently end up selecting the wrong option. Also, the response of the touchscreen on my C-HR is very sluggish and it's difficult to know whether it has detected the touch or not. Fortunately the heating and ventilation controls are serparate.

Yes I went in a Tesla the other day - very impressive but I found the touchscreen setup to be daunting.
