New Car on PCP - Insurance question (GAP & Alloy) - longie

Hi All,

I have just spoken to LV about the need to GAP insurance, and they informed me that they cover the full cost of the original cost of the car for year 1.. does anyone know if this is the case, I have had a look at their policy.. but not sure.. and thus assume I get the GAP insurance now, and delay by 12 months ??

Also, was thinking about the different insurances, especially as the car has diamond cut alloys.. any experiences or recommendations on alloy and tire insurance ? worth it ?

Lots of companies specifically exclude diamond cut alloys from their insurance - up to you to check the insurance is suitable and does cover them before taking out the policy.

Regards GAP insurance, if the car did get stolen/written off after year 1, but before the end of the PCP, note that YOU will be liable for any shortfall. Having GAP insurance makes a lot of sense.

We went with Frank Pickles when we took out GAP. Well worthwhile getting a few quotes, and I seem to recall that we also got a discount on ours by quoting a code from an owner's forum (I think HJ has (or had) similar discount arrangements with one of the brokers, not sure if the same one or not).

I use ALA as recommended by HJ. Very reasonably priced and easy to deal with.
No sure how they react in the event of a claim tho.

From a colleague's experience GAP claims can be just as bad as any other insurance claim.

HIs car was written off, he had GAP but it took about 4 months for the insurance company and GAP company to agree a GAP figure.

No amount of persuasion would get them to pay out part and argue the remainder between themselves. He spent hours on the phone and in the end had to buy a cheap run around to cover the period until he was fully paid out - this was all over the "huge" sum of £500, which he even offered to forego for a prompt resolution.

thanks everyone for your feedback. I have heard that some insurance companies although cover the 1st year, have clauses like if its your fault they will not cover... does anyone know of such cases.. I will give give LV a call. I know GAP is a nightmare, but concerned about the shortfall.

NFU insurance (check if its still the case or what cover applies to PCP type deals) offer full replace with another identical new vehicle if the car is written off in the first two years.

More expensive insurer than most, but with first class service when you need them (i know from when i was a customer, but now with older cars they are just too expensive for us), a possible alternative for new car buyers though.
