Audi A3 - Audi Warranty - littlerussell

Hi

I have an Audi A3, bought as an ex-demo from the dealer, currently 2.5 years old. To the rear bumper, the paint is starting to peel, and there is faint evidence of a previous repair.

Dealer has confirmed verbally that when the car arrived new with them, it had damage to this area and that this was repaired by them at that point. However, they are saying that paint repairs are only warranted for 2 years (now expired) rather than the full three-year warranty.

This doesn't make any sense to me, as surely an Audi-approved paint repair should be included in the three-year warranty particularly when, as in this case, the car arrived off the transporter with damage.

Any advice welcome? Alternatively, how much should I be looking at for a local bodyshop to spray over an area about the size of a 50p piece?

Thanks

Mobile minor body repairs may worth a look, in similar circunstances I stuck a GB sticker over it...

Mobile repair is probably what Audi used and why it is now peeling!

I would not put up with this. They sold you a car that they had repaired which was almost new and did not tell you about the repair leaving you to believe you had the balance of the 3 year warranty. It would cost peanuts for the dealer to repair and presumably you have given him your service business. Complain to a manager and Audi uk if necessary as their rubbish repair has devalued your car and they had not told you at point of sale

I feel 100% certain the Audi will have no interest in this and will not help, why should they. The OP bought a used car that the Dealer appears to have repaired badly sometime in its history which means the warranty no longer applies to that part.

The OP's only alternative if the dealer will not sort is to get the work done and then claim back the money via small claims.

I wonder if the problem has beeen caused by a parking knock - bumper flexes and paint loses adhesion. If so, a different argument.

Sorry, I do not go along with this train of thought. As I understand it the dealer represents the manufacturing brand and is supported by the manufacturer during the warranty lifetime and sometimes afterwards depending on the circumstances eg recalls or high instance of component failures that dealer can refer for consideration. Anything which tarnishes the brand would not be looked on too lightly by the manufacturer even if the repair was outside their control. The car was damaged in transit so presumably the dealer had a claim against the dealer/car transporter/storage before delivery. Yes it is down to the dealer but if he is uncooperative complain to Audi has the dealer has knowing sold a repaired car. Cars are frequently damaged in transit and repaired and sold as brand new to unsuspecting customers

I don't find it at all surprinsing that paintwork repairs are not covered to the same extent as the bodywork (which, actually, from the factory, i'd expect could be as much as 10 years). You need to realise that paint is applied at the factory during the manufacturing proccess in a totally different manner than any car body repair shop could, never mind one of these mobile repairer's. There is no way the repair could be done to the same quality and longevity as the factory paint, hence the shorter warranty for the repair.

I suspect your options are to either have it repaired again, which, to be honest, shouldn't be too expensive. Or, depending on where the afflicted area is, put a sticker of some kind, or possibly one of those strips you get to protect the bumper from dogs jumping in or out.

If the paintwork was accident repair, then you might have a point - although, even then, an approved repair should not affect the new car warranty (whatever that is).

But a 'repair' to a new car definitely should not affect any warranty. They don't even call them repairs, the weasel-word they use IIRC is "rectification". If it has failed because of the difference between the factory process and the rectification, then the dealer/manufacturer must surely sytand behind it - other things being equal. If they are admitting that the car was repainted before delivery then they can hardly expect the buyer to be happy with it.

I had a new, white, Golf once that had a noticeable pink cast to one front wing that was also misaligned. The dealer surmised that it had been 'rectified' at the VAG distribution centre. It was a company car, the company didn't want to pursue it, so it was never reworked.

Always remember that your contract is with the dealer who sold you the car, not with the manufacturer.

The only legal action that a customer can take where there is no contractual relationship is for negligence, which isn't the case here. If the car was damaged when brand new, then the dealer is the one to take it up with Audi.

You bought a car with a three year warranty from the date of registration I assume, so unless you were made aware of the paint repair and the associated two year warranty, I don’t see how they can wiggle out of their obligation to repair it. Assuming you can prove it is a defect rather than damage caused during your ownership. Does the contract you signed, or the invoice, say anything sbout a repair or damage?
