Just wanted to find out if anyone has had experience in claiming for malicious damage on their car insurance on the forum.

Unfortunately my car as well as others, were targeted in the area and severely damaged by way of scratches which are in no way possible to remove, and requires a professional paint job as the scratches are deep and also across the body of the car.

My one experience of making a non fault claim increased my premium by 40% 10 years ago. I didn't claim as there was No damage but simply informed my then insurer that a 3rd party reversed into my then vehicle, in case they made a claim.

My current insurer (one of the major insurers) doesn't explicitly define if such damage is covered under my comprehensive policy.

I'd like to know if this would be of detrimental impact or if I should just stump up a hefty sum for the repair. I'm also in the process of switching insurers as my policy with the current one expires in 7 days and their renewal is more expensive than their major competitors.

Early indications is that it'll cost at least £2,000 to repair.

A valuable car requires an insurance approved standard of repair or it’ll cripple its value. At this level I’d claim on your policy and accept that your premium will rise despite you not being at fault. It’s highly likely it’ll increase anyway on account of your neighbours claims by for their damage as your neighbourhood risk factor will increase in the insurance firms eyes.

Comprehensive insurance is exactly what it says, comprehensive. You are covered for repairs of this type.

You will loose some of your n0-claims bonus if you claim but if you have protected no- claims you may well pay no extra when you renew. Some companies load you policy after a claim even if you have protected bonus, some don't. Our insurers garantee not to increase premiums if you have protected no-claims.

You need to work out which is best for you. Either pay up front or perhaps pay a little extrs each year for a few years. If you know your existing premium there will be a scale in the documents that enable you to work out the increase based on the amount of bonus you loose.

The wife had an accident last August, a car ran into the back of her. Informed the insurers (Aviva) but never actually claimed since the 3rd party paid to have the work carried out. When the renewal came it had increased £3 from the previous year. Phones them (like I always do - normally get a better deal that way) and they knocked £40 off.

£2k is a high price to pay from one's own pocket.

I am surprised how non fault claim can increase premium by 40%. I had a fault claim few years back and premium didn't rise over 20%.

Yeah I know. I've done some comparison quotes not using the reg number, phony name and different door number just to see what impact it may have on a claim for £2k and some are coming back at 50% more than my current premium or well over a grand. My renewal came in at £400 a few weeks back which was cheaper than a year ago.

I've protected no claims and have 18 years no claims but never see this as being a beneficial from doing some reading.

You could try doing an insurance renewal quote and pretend you made a claim, to see how much extra you pay, this year, and subsequent years.

BTW how do you get 18 years NCB? Several insurers I deal with would only give me 9 years even though it's 14 years since my last claim. I was very cheesed off.

I suspect they mean 18 years since a claim.

As you say most insurers cap at 9 or 10 years, however after 5 its generally only 1% for each additional year and after a claim you go to 3 years anyway. As alluded to protected NCB can have so many caveats it is questionable whether its worth having.

My only recent claim was found 100% the other persons fault, but still resulted in a renewal quote twice what I'd paid the year before.

However as the insurance market is so competitive I shopped around and found cover at a similar price with a no fault claim to report.

My last fault claim was years ago and due to a hit and run. It resulted in my NCB reduce to 3 years, but I still found cover cheaper than I had paid the year before with 5 years and no claims!

You just have to shop around and find the bext deal in the market at the time you need cover. Getting quotes now could be meaningless as there is little logic to insurance!

I say 18 years since my last claim, although insurers will only ever go to 9 years max from what I've seen.

Your premium will still go up even if you have protected NCD.
You don’t loose your NCB but as you have claimed you classed as being higher risk therefore your premium before NCB applied will be higher.
