So saw a car last week and it was ok but it was 10k, it was 14 reg with 50k miles top spec

kept an offer of 9k, he said he will discuss with the manager.

he calls me today to say he cant change the price after discussing with him.

is it worth putting another offer as he said he cant do nothing on price,

similar cars in market are about 9k, it has a few upgrades but still not worth a grand extra.

i have more cars in mind but some of them are a little too far from my home 100 to 200 miles at an average.

There is one for 9k done lesser miles on cargiant so will probably have to pick that one up, or anyfreebies i could ask him for. the tyres have 4mm tread left on it so i know i will need to change the tyres very soon.

Clearly the dealer thinks he can get the full £10k for it. You could try waiting a couple of weeks: if it hasn't sold he may be more amenable to an offer. Or look on Cars for Sale on this site as well as Autotrader: there should be plenty of Octavias around.

A good deal isn’t just about the amount of discount you can get but you’ve already done the right thing by comparing prices elsewhere to see what the going rate is.

Some dealers aim for maximum profit per sale rather than volume and this one sounds like that’s their policy too so I’d shop around. With a used motor you can’t compare purely on price, you need to see it in the metal to compare condition and history too. But don’t go in expecting £1k off anything. £200-£400 is the norm and that’s assuming the car isn’t already particularly cheap.

As always the best cars at this age/money are with main dealers on their approved used schemes. These are worth paying extra for as they’re generally of a higher standard and come with a years approved used warranty and have a full main dealer history.

Always best to buy close to home. Any faults and dealer has 3 attempts to fix and you have to get car to them.

Prices probably vary area to area, more in SE England than NE. I saw a very cheap Peugeot cabriolet with a main dealer (non Peugeot): Aberdeen and it was January.

Be careful with the tyres; they will fit the cheapest. I’d rather have a discount or specify make(s).

Do not buy North of Scotland cars - lots of salt on roads & coastal towns have sea salt problems. I know cars are coated in the factory but they still rust - Japan cars & California cars are not rusty for a reason.

Nearly 40 years ago at university a friend bought a cheapTriumph Dolomite . I think previous owner worked on rigs. More rust than car.

Just 50 years ago I drove my Morris 1100 eastwards across Canada in a reasonably rust-free condition (I was very green then about preventing corrosion). After one winter in Ottawa, where roads were salted, it had set in, but I managed to sell the car to a Japanese before heading back to the UK. There was demand for cars from the prairie provinces because roads were not salted there - it got too cold to be any use.

Here's an idea you might have played with or could use in the future.

You've moved forward on this by now I hope- but one approach I've heard about, would have been to ask the salesman what the £10k includes. The objective being to encourage him/her to once again articulate the benefits, the bells and whistles, " 6 months tax", "guarantee", new MOT with no advisables?, full service? etc

Once he/she has finished this spiel-you should pause and look as though you are doing some thinking. Don't speak other than say " Yeah--ok- certainly worth thinking about that"...the fact that you haven't said yes or no-might encourage salesman to then ask you to come up with an offer. Then--what you could say is "it's a little higher that my notional £8.5k limit--which i could offer right away-cash"....quite rightly the salesperson might then be thinking that they have a reasonably serious buyer , so might throw in a further gooodie or two( car mats, full tank of petrol etc). Don't commit-You should still look and behave siliently. After a pause- If you feel bold--why not ask salesperson to go and speak to his manager. If you don't--ask for time to think, exchange telephone numbers and say you'll get back to them . I guarantee the dealership will ring you within 24 hours

Dealers don't like stock sitting on a forecourt taking up space. Yes --your offer of £8.5k is probably a wee bit too low--but as a way forward-manager might-just might- knock £500 off the £10k. If not--then walk away.

If you start talking £1,500 less than the sticker screen then the salesman will categorise you as a waste of time and either disengage or palm you off on the trainee. Be realistic and they’ll try to get a sweetener from the gaffer. Always pays to walk away and offer over the phone, makes you serious but not overly keen. Plus it’s a good tip to make your visit . Dealers are in it to make a profit and no one has margin enough to take you seriously if you start talking four figures on a used motor.

Thanks for all the replies, the dealership came back with a offer of filling the tank up and thats it so i moved on to another car. Since it is again quite far away they are moving the car from there to close to where i live and i will just take it as the new one is nov 16 registered with only 15k on clock and is about 12k, its not in budget but i might have to fork out a bit more than i want to coz 2014 same care is 10 and 2015 is 11k.

what i really feel angered about is the valuation inusrers gave me for my car at 8.5k, i have no option but to appeal to Financial ombudsman and see if i can get any more as the car i lost i cant get it for what they are giving to me but thats a loss i cant really do anything about now.

To quote a phrase that has gone completely out of fashion, sometimes life can be a bit 'crunchy', you can't expect it to be 'soggy' all the time. For example, expecting your car to be transported 100 miles for nothing. How much should they fork out just to get your sale?
