Polo 2000 - Replacing door window glass - bathtub tom

I've been asked to replace a broken door window glass. It's got electric windows and I've been told they don't work! I guess the motor will be in the top position, but I'll have to lower it.

Any tips, hints or advice would be welcome.

The problem you have here is that if the motor is not working you will not be able to access the bolts/nuts that release the clamps that hold the glass to the regulator mechanism. I would think it is a cable drive system. My next step would be to remove the door card and see if you can get any activity at the motor.by powering it direct from a battery.Releasing the regulator from the door inner skin may just give enough clearance to get at the clamp nuts as the glass is broken ,but I very much doubt if you will be able to install a new glass with this method.

You're right, it's a cable drive system. Getting the membarane off was a pain - all that lovely, sticky, black mastic!

The motor and drive system was fine, but the clamps had broken away from the cables due to a broken, tiny plastic clip.

The owner now wants me to replace the motor and cables just for the sake of that plastic clip so the window will work again.

If the motor can be seperated from the mechanism, all you need is a new cable regulator unit, which will come with the new clips attached.

I believe the owner's getting parts from a scrapyard, cheaper than the dealer.

Let's hope the bits they get have intact plastic clips, although I did offer to 'bodge' the job with cable ties or self-tappers.

Apart from dismantling the dashboard on a Volvo 440 ES - delving about inside car doors to repair window regulators is my least favourite job on any car.

I would sooner do a complete engine rebuild.

You have my sympathy - and watch your fingers on the sharp edges!

Finally did it today.

New glass carriers were a right PITA to fit and I lost count of the number of times I fitted and removed the door card to fit other parts, because I'd forgotten how they went from a few days ago.

Glass £20, carriers £9.

Not bad for an '00 reg car that had been written off by the insurers.
