Friend has 2001 vectra 2.0 tdi, it has done about 50k miles. It is running fine but is leaking a small amouont of oil from the underside of the exhaust gas recirculating valve. On this model it is a circular plastic thing that sits at the front of the engine. There is a small hole in the underside that leaks oil, not enough to make an impact on the dipstick level, but it does make rather a mess of the engine bay if not regularly cleaned up. Have heard that this used to be metal on older vectras and has been replaced by a metal one in newer versions. Does anyone have any idea what is causing oil to leak from here, or even get into EGR in first place? Heard they are expensive to replace. Is this a common problem for this model?
Any help appreciated.

If you remove the EGR valve (wear protective gloves) you'll find a very unpleasant mess inside the inlet manifold. This black sticky substance is a combination of oil from the engine breather and soot from the exhaust. This can build up and cause the EGR valve to stick open, which only makes the problem worse. In your case it seems there is a pinhole leak in the EGR valve diaphragm which is allowing oil fumes from the breather system through.I'd suggest you replace the valve and ideally clean out the inlet manifold (awful job).

EGR unit doesnt appear to want to come off without breaking, its plastic on this model. Can anyone confirm that this has been replaced on newer models with a metal one?

Just wondering if you solved your EGR problem as mine also slightly leaks.
If so, how much did it cost?
Was it a big job, etc etc?
