Best car for London - diesel-y
Hi all

I've sold my last car and decided to go on my company's closed car scheme. It's an unusual list and only contains 4 that I think I can spec up to a level to be acceptable - the main manufacturers are Mini, Toyota, Renault, Audi/VW. I think with all the stop-start I do in London the time is for automatic, so with that in mind it's down to:

MINI Cooper auto media pepper
Audi A1 1.0 DSG7 Sport + tech + comfort pack
Toyota CHR hybrid Icon (basic)
VW polo r line 1.0 dsg/1.4 BlueGT DSG (+opts)

I've test driven the CHR in a higher spec but didn't like it on the motorway and thought visibility was poor so it's trailing a bit but I do love the look and reliability.The Polo I drove was the 1.0 with the dsg and that seemed smooth enough so made me question whether I needed the bluegt. The mini I drove was a manual so any experience with the auto would be appreciated - also I thought it a little noisy and hard but the salesman said if I didn't trace the 17 inch wheels on the test car it would be a lot different. Does anyone know whether that is that true? The A1 I've not tried as I assume it's the same as the polo and they only have 1.4s in my local.

I drive about an hour around London everyday, and then do an hours motorway journey on top of that twice a week to see family.

Or should I just accept manuals and all the changing that goes on in London? In which case I can get Merc A180d Sport or an A3 1.0 Sport?

Thanks in advance.

What an odd collection, the obvious London car (to me, if i was forced at gunpoint to drive the place daily) is a Yaris/Auris hybrid or their big brother Prius, can you not negotiate one of those in place of the CHR thingy.

Yes, surely if one has to drive around London, a hybrid that complies with Congestion Charge exemptions is the one to go for, above all other requirements.

I actually avoid the CCZ (just!) but did think its a notable advantage if my route needs to change!

Biggest issue for me is safety as the pillars are so thick! I think its in there solely because of expected residuals as I believe we buy outright...

Have to agree. I'd be aiming for an Auris Hybrid for this sort of usage, it's a pretty relaxing thing to drive in stop start driving. Only weak point is when trying to drive hard at higher speeds, fine if you take it nice and easy but not such a good combination for an enthusiastic driver out of town.

The Polo is due replacement, though I do find our own 1.2 diesel pretty soft riding and comfortable for a supermini but I imagine the A1 (though I've never driven one) to be harder riding since it is aimed at a younger market and has a firmer set up usually combined with wider wheels. Otherwise a lovely, well made little car. Wouldn't trust the DSG boxes in either if I was paying myself but if it's on the company tab and remains under warranty there's no risk to you.

I'm no fan of current Mini's. The first of the modern Minis from 2001 have proven to be poor regarding longterm reliability and I find their style over quality/value focus unappealing. Last one I sat in was nowhere near as well built as our Polo never mind more costly direct rivals. The auto isn't popular and will be harder to sell on. But again no risk if you're not paying the bills.

Best car for London is a Range Rover. Sit in traffic in a comy armchair, automatic, high driving position means you can actually see whats going on around you, easy to park, light steering makes it feel nimble. Judging by the amount around london, I can't be far wrong. Not on the list but if you want best car for london...

Most RRs around London are hotel-owned or private hire journeys - chauffering for well-heeled customers.

There's no advantage to it whatsoever, unless you want to glare directly into the eyeballs of white van man when he doesnt let you out of a give way, which will happen a lot in a Range Rover. Also, high frequency of fuel stops, and of course the threat of Rangie non-reliability. Going into limp-home mode around Parliament Square.....shudder...

Diesel Range Rovers can manage just under 30mpg in town driving. I drive an older Disco auto and manage similar. I've driven around London in normal cars and it's no comparison. Not had any issues with white van drivers, i'm guessing discos have less snob appeal. As for reliability... well I had my last disco for 8 years (99 model year) and it never let me down despite me adding 120k to it. I'm sure others will point to reliability surveys but these factor in too much 'perception'. Strangely enough Jaguar are near the top for reliability these days and have been for a while, whereas their JLR stablemate LR with same components suffer a bad rep. The older P38s were a nightmare though, too far ahead of their time. Still, i'd rather buy one of them than a reverse engineered Japanese import, or a German vehicle which is just as likely to have major electrical issues..

Do you really need a car for travelling around in London? Can you not use public transport (admitedly better north of the Thames than south) for the most part, and either (the above and second one - no congestion charges to be paid):

  1. Hire a car for longer trips (away from London or when you need to carry heavy stuff [presumably not that often]);
  2. Get a mini cab to the destination, or;
  3. As I do (if your company offers this) take a car allowance instead and buy the car you actually want/need (NOT a diesel - see other threads for descriptions of serious/expensive to fix reliability issues when driven in town/on short journeys and its likely that the GLA/Mayor/borough councils will come down hard on diesels [see parking charges articles of late, as a start]).

I find that I'm more than quids in if you go for the car allowance (especially if you don't do that much company mileage) - you really only need a company car these days if you do well over 20,000 miles pa, as the tax system works against you if you only do lower mileages, especially if you get more expensive models. Note that the tax you pay is based on the NEW LIST PRICE (as well as CO2 emissions/engine type) and NOT the final agreed price you pay (including second hand cars).

If you HAVE to have a car (e.g. to lug loads around, e.g. reps with loads of stuff to show/presentational materials, and travelling more than walking distance twice a week or more), then a hybrid sounds the best choice, followed by a small petrol city car - its not as though you'll be needing something fast around town, given traffic/average speeds.

If you can, shy away from the higher-end/'R-Line' type models (I'm talking about those which have low profile tyres, not VAG specific ones - as you'll feel all those lovely London potholes if you get them as well as be stung tax-wise) and get a medium-spec car with higher profile (min 60 profile) tyres.

An auto would be good for use in slow, jig-jog traffic, and I would stay away from the VAG ones unless it is the latest wet-clutch type (get written proof that it would be). Normally I'd also shy away from makes with CVT auto gearboxes, but as others have said, they are predominatly designed for in-town driving and would be fine in your case.

One final point is that any car's start-stop system would be detrimental to the life of the car's battery if used in town, as, if used on short trips, the battery would not fully charge if the car was in start-stop mode and constantly using electrical power to restart many times during each journey. Better to turn it off - they are really best used for 'split' journeys made up of a combination jig-jog town and faster-flowing drivingwhere it gives the battery an opportunity to recharge fully.

Best of luck.

Best car for London would be a recently retired Black London cab with one of those "Licenced by the Neopolitan Police" plates on the back.

Very convenient for all sorts of reasons.

That or any car sporting foreign number plates, of which there appear to be many.

I agree with GB above: it is an odd list, and a Yaris or Auris hybrid could be ideal for your needs. Both are a lot cheaper than the CHR so it must be possible to get them on your company scheme. The Yaris is of a similar size to your other three.

We got an A1 a month ago for my wife: it's a lovely little car (ours is a 1.4 manual) and way ahead of a Mini (which she had before, several of them) in performance, torque and refinement. If you decide on an A1, probably best to go for the SE suspension which you can even if you have it in Sport trim.

Be aware that if you are looking at a Mini Cooper Auto the fuel consumption is somewhere worse than sticking the fill hose down the nearest drain and keeping the trigger pulled-seriously.
