Just toying with this, and wondering if the collective have any idea of the real costs involved.

Supposing someone, me, was considering grey importing the above vehicle used from Japan, cost of car in Japan say £5000 for arguments sake (could be anywhere between £4 and £8k depending), roughly what costs on top of that would be payable by the time the car was legal on the road here.

Obviously there's shipping, and insurance for the voyage, then import duty and VAT, then IVA testing (the level of that depends on age of car apparently, over 10 years its a simpler test) subject to certain modifications.

Now comes the thorney question of road tax or VED whatever you want to call it, do grey imports still get emission tested so go into the correct VED band as they would if a normal UK supplied model?

I'll be honest/mercinary here, if say a 2007/8 grey import 3.0 Litre Outback is going to be stung with a £500 VED bill annually as a UK supplied vehicle (with different model name, possibly Bean) would be, then this idea is banished permanently.

The difference in Japan prices and those being asked by pro grey importers is huge, obviously they have to make a profit and i'm not being unreasonable.

I'll also tag another question about VED on here if i may, one of the companies selling ex police cars makes claims that as a police car the what would otherwise be full house VED @ £500 for a T5 Volvo does not apply to a plod car...for life...is this so? because it seems too good to be true, and i suspect our tax gatherers, who need to keep the country solvent'ish for as long as possible..:-) well at least until all the referendum(s) are over, would soon be on this.

Replying on the subject of tax free plod cars etc.

AFAIK all UK government service vehicles are not subject to road tax or as it is now called VED.

However, I can't somehow see you getting away with not paying it if you buy an ex-plod car and register it privately in your name.

I personally imported a car from Japan in 2003, I paid about £3500 for the car and I seem to remember it coming to £5100 by the time I had paid everything and got it on the road.

The shipping costs were based on the volumetric size of the vehicle and I had to pay a shipping company to deal with it at the docks, they also did the paperwork for the HMRC. Remember you'll pay VAT on everything including the import duty! effectively a TAX on a TAX!

SVA was fairly easy to sort out, fit a rear fog lamp, had to disable some lights that did not comply and fitted some repeaters on front wings. Other things were internal protrutions of switches and heater controls etc. external protrusions and sharp edges. Just speak to the local VOSA testing station and they usually know what mods need doing to a specific model.

With regards to road tax, as there was no specific figures for emissions, I ended up paying the flat rate for vehicles over 1500cc.

Thanks chaps for the input.

Wackyracer proves it can be done, but daresay i'll have to enquire at a specialist grey importer/dealer to get the rundown on what the current regs are, both for import duties and VAT and the dreaded VED, i'm simply not paying £500 for Gideon to throw against the wall or award to some expense fiddler.

The Scoobs i'm looking at are more or less the same as 3.0 Outbacks sold here, but many come with (preferred in Japan) velour seats, which i too would prefer and are almost impossible to find here in a UK spec 3.0.

I bought my car from a company in Japan called Angel motors, they found a suitable car, sent me photos and details on it and put it on the ship. When it arrived I used a shipping company called Penguin shipping in southampton who did all the paperwork for duty and VAT.

I wouldn't bother doing it now, unless you can get a car dirt cheap in Japan. The duty and VAT can make a seemingly cheap car cost more than buying a UK car.

If you do buy one that needs some work, do not get it done in Japan as they will charge you duty and VAT on that too.

Do they still need undersealant etc doing or was that a '90s thing?

I don't know, I haven't looked at them since I imported mine in 2003. I never bothered undersealing mine and it was still like new underneath when I sold it after 9 years of use in the UK.

Many thanks again, those companies noted, good points about duty/VAT, its not something to rush into and we're not in a rush, probably a low mileage 10 year old example might be a better bet not only to keep the duties payable down with lower purchase price (and might be a simpler vehicle approval test @ 10 years i believe) but if first regd before March 06 won't come with a £500 VED stinger anyway.

As for rustproofing, well that's part of the reason for going direct import used from Japan, it won't have seen salt so won't have the otherwise severely corroded rear subframe that Legacy's here get, plus the rest of the underbody should be corrosion free too incl brake calipers pipes etc.

I rustproof my own anyway so part of the reasoning for this is to get a cleaner canvas in the first place, plus its difficult to find genuine low mileage examples here of the model at all, not a cheap car to keep well serviced as the miles rise unless you DIY, which is both remarkably simple and very cheap, but few new or newish car buyers do that on any car.

Take your point about not necessarily needing anti rust work though, my sons RA Imprezza was never treated but was in remarkable condition underneath, it now lives in Czech Republic complete with its frankly ridiculous power output....i suspect the same would not have been the case had it been subject to the UK barrage of salt every winter for its first 8 years.

Much to think about.

^ very interesting, I can see the attraction of a car that has never seen salt. Yes the rear subframe on mine is currently converting itself to iron oxide :(
