!!! IMPORTANT !!!

hi guys! My name is Michael, I’m a student at Middlesex University London and I’m currently doing a study to find out the influence of car commercials in the UK on the perception of car brands. I would highly appreciate if you could take part in my 5 minute survey! Please click the link below to begin! Thank you!

I attempted the first page. There is a serious issue - presumably only one response per line is acceptable, but multiple responses are possible, and if you click one option by mistake you cannot unclick it. At this point I gave up.

And why is the wording so repetitive? "After watching the commercial for MERCEDES, please state to which degree you would associate MERCEDES with the following attributes.." appears five times on the first page.

I'm using the latest version of Opera browser.

I've not seen the commercial for Mercedes so that's me out.

Our 'top notch' UK students 'shining though' yet again...and people wonder why companies often turn to foreign graduates...

I'm sorry, Michael, but this survey isn't going to have a great deal of value.

- There is no link that I could see between the adverts themselves and the questions you ask.

- There is no ability for us to comment on (your words) the 'influence of car commercials....on the perception of car brands'. Presumably the results will be analysed by computer; that in itself reduces its value.

- The adverts themselves told us nothing about the cars pictured.

- In the Vauxhall advert I couldn't see why you have 'fuel economy' and 'economy' as different catgories without an explanation.

This isn't entirely your fault: you have a lazy supervisor who hasn't given you the guidance you need. A pity, as it's potentially an interesting topic.

In fairness, I think it needs to be said that designing a survey is very challenging. You have to put yourself into the mind of every potential respondent; you have to ensure there is a logical connection between ideas/questions; you have to make the survey visually acceptable at least; you need to ensure that, technically, it all works. Finally, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve.

But it's back to the drawing board for this survey.

And one more inportant point in designing a survey: you have to have a solid understanding of the respondents and their relationship to the population as a whole, or the car-buying population. Surveys like this have no means of gaining any sort of representative sampling so - apart from any entertainment value they may have - are academically practically valueless.

Shouldn't we have clicked the circles both before and after watching the commercials? How does this show any influence the commercials might have had?
