my radio keeps cutting for no reason but as soon as i push the on button it plays again is there another switch somewhere that turns it off like the ignition
|
How often is it cutting out - every few seconds or every ½ hour or so? Is the period of cutting out always the same?
|
it tends to cut out after about 20 minutes even when playing a tape, but comes back on when i push the on button

Here's a wild guess...
Some cars will allow the Radio to work with the ignition off. However, many of them will then switch the radio off after a period of time (its about 15 minutes on mine) assuming that the radio has been left on by mistake.
It detects whether or not the feed from the ignition switch is live.
So, does your radio work with the ignition off ? When you get in the car and switch the car on, do you have to switch the radio on manually or does it come on wiht the ignition ?
I'd guess there is a fault on one of the live feeds - it will have two - one of which is "always on" and the other is ignition switch dependent.

the radio works both with the ignition on or off but when you turn the ignition off the radio goes off as well
|
Do you have it on particularly loud? Which would generate more heat and it might have a heat cut-out.

Possibly not this, but....
I had an Astra with a similar problem. The fuse for the radio is also the fuse for the boot light. The wires to the boot light chaffed against the car body and eventually blew fuses regularly.
Have a quick look at these wires, you never know. Just pop the boot light out of its housing. And have a good look at the fuse for signs of overheating.

All Vauxhall radios turn on & off with ignition, if they're on when you turn the ignition off... but you can turn them back on by pressing the on/off button. They then go off again after a while - until you push the button again. Sounds like its normal, have a look at your handbook? (Or do you mean going off even when the ignition is on?)
