Ford Ka - Ford Ka- smell, running badly, EML - mikeey84

Hi All, my wife runs a 2002 Ford Ka. 1.3 duratec engine, 60k or so, serviced fairly recently.

I have noticed when I maneuver it, i can smell an unpleasant smell, not eggy, not like oil smoke. A mechanic (who was sorting something else) commented that he thought it smelt like it was running a bit rich.

The EML comes on with p0420, which is catalyst running below tolerance.

It "judders" when I put it under power, carrys on gaining speed, but stutters.

is this all indicative of a failed CC? Passed the past 2 MOTs with emissions just within tolerance.

Is it worth getting the lamda/MAF/something else checked? the only code generated when the EML comes on is as above.

many thanks!

As that is the only code generated I'd test the cat.

Relativly easy if you have the equipment, one of those point and shoot thermometer guns.

there should be a definate difference in temperature taken from before to after the cat,

Correct operation of the cat generates heat.

so pointing it after the cat pipe it should read higher temp than the pipe before the cat or the cat isn't doing it's job.

But even if it is the cat I'd still be concerned for what had "killed" it in the first place
