Vauxhall - a replacement for the Nova. VIVA! - RT

The Nova grew into the Corsa, indeed the Nova was known as Corsa-A everywhere outside the UK.

The new Viva is to replace the Agila, in the class smaller than the Corsa/Nova - sadly it's based on GM's Daewoo-built Chevrolet Spark which isn't one of GM's best.

The Vauxhall Viva will be known as the Opel Karl elsewhere in Europe, a departure from Opel/Vauxhall using the same model name having amalgamated them in the '90s.

Indeed, it's one of the classic product-naming mistakes. In Spanish, no va means "doesn't go."

Up there with the Toyota MR2 (pronounced in French as em-er-deux or merde), and the Mitsu Pajero (Spanish for onanist, hence it being called 'Montero' there).

So why was the Pajero called Shogun for the UK - and why is the Toyota Prado called Land-cruiser in the UK ?

Shogun was chosen by the importer as having the right "image". Mitsubishi was imported by the Colt Car Company ( or its successors ) when the Shogun was launched and not by Mitsubishi themselves.

An urban legend that:

It's an urban legend that it affected sales, yes, but it is curious that when Vauxhall named the car in the UK, they didn't follow suit with GM's product naming in the rest of Europe.

Because at that point Vauxhall and Opel used different names:-

Nova > Corsa

Astra > Kadett

Cavalier > Ascona then Vectra

Carlton > Rekord, then Omega

Royale > Diplomat

It was after that when they standardised on all the Opel model names except Kadett became Astra.

Looks like they're reverting to different names again.

Corsa has always sounded rough to me. Viva is spiritual sucessor for Nova.

BTW, Royale > Senator or Monza!

So how does this differ from an Adam? I thought that was Vauxhall's city car.

Vauxhall - a replacement for the Nova. VIVA! - RT

The Adam is built on a different platform, the more up-to-date SCCS from the Fiat alliance days and used by the Corsa, including the next Corsa - it'll be built in Germany to a higher standard than the Spark/Karl/Viva built in Korea, which sits on the old Gamma platform that older generations of Corsa used.

I read elsewhere that the car in the link below is replacing the Maruti Suzuki version of the Suzuki Splash, which is called a Ritz. Where does it fit into that equation?

The outgoing Vauxhall Agila is a rebadged Suzuki Splash, built in Hungary by Suzuki Magyar. The Splash is also built in India by Maruti Suziki as the Maruti Suzuki Ritz.

The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is the India-buit version of the Suzuki Alto

The Japanese built Alto is a different car to the Indian built Alto - it is the Indian built version that is soild in some European markets including the UK.

The Splash and Agila were a joint development between GM and Suzuki

The Indian built Celerio will replace the Alto and the Splash in the Suzuki range.

The Vauxhall Viva and Opel Karl will replace the Agila in the GM range, and will be the GM entry range in the city car sector, sitting below the Adam.

I also missed Cavalier Coupe > Manta

You are forgiven. :)

Also, Chevette > Kadett. www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C324322

If this is based on the Spark using the cheap as possible components from the Chevrolet side of the business, it could end up being a pile of junk.
