Reanault Modus Diesel Auto; Mazda 2 Petrol Auto - Robotised-clutch Gear Selector Fails to Engage - Trevor P

Currently with a Renault Modus diesel, but also with an older Mazda 2, the semi-automatic robotised-clutch gear selector, when placed in neutral at traffic lights, sometimes fails to engage drive (first gear) to set off. Always seems to happen, embarrasingly, at traffic lights. Admittedly, both models were over four years old, so some corrosion on the contacts could be responsible.

Is it difficult to access these beneath the gear lever? Can the relay switch assembly be changed? Is it located inside or outside the vehicle? And is it even helpful to select neutral at traffic lights because there is no transmission creep like conventional automatics? Thank you.
