Toyota Yaris - Small turbo diesel cars - ulysses

I'm researching buying my next used car (10 years old) and am interested in the range of small turbo diesel engines about such as the Yaris, Clio, Fiesta, Corsa, Astra etc.

I have only owned petrol engines before and these cars are very inviting with their £30 tax and high MPGs.

Higher cost of buying and cost of diesel aside, what should I know about these turbo diesel cars? Are they reliable? How is it different to service a diesel?

Many thanks.

Looking for a 10 year old car, then stick to petrol.Diesel cars at this age can be a real money pit,and wipe out any fuel or Ved savings.

Have a look for a Hyundai gets 1500 TD, plenty around with good history and low miles. Really well built cars and much better to drive than you would imagine. I would only buy a diesel if its got a FSH. Mind you a small petrol in this range of car will be just as economical.

Thanks! Overlooked the Getz for some reason. Sorry to be a dork but what's FSH?

Full service history, it also helps to verify low mileage.

Probably the most reliable cars of the period are ones that use the 8 valve Hdi engine i.e. peugeot 406 which is probably to big, the 306 which is smaller or early 206 but must be with the 2.0. 8 valve engine.

These engines are almost indestructable and are much simpler than later engines with no DPF for a start. I have a 406 estate that has covered over 230,000 miles and it is mostly original including the DMF and clutch.

The road tax is £145 and fuel economy over 60mpg on a long journey.
