Picasso 2.0HDI (2002) - Clutch vibration/tremor - Bowman44

I'm unsure whether this clutch is about to let go or heal up by itself. First symptoms 3 weeks ago were very stiff and jerky pedal travel which made it feel like something would soon give or snap. I took to leaving it in neutral when parked as it was such a job to disengage the clutch. The odd thing is that this condition was much worse with the engine off - as soon as it was started everything was much smoother. The other morning I got in it and the pedal was back to normal again but there is now a fairly solid vibration or tremor through the pedal when clutch is depressed which stops right at the bottom of travel. Another thing is that there is now a diabolical vibration which shakes the whole car when I pull away in 1st but is ok once on the move. I don't have many spare £400 quids at the mo so am trying to soft peddle the old girl on the off chance that I can find someone who has had a similar experience and can suggest the simplist and cheapest possiblities first. The clutch does not apparently slip, and last weekend I even reluctantly towed a bogged in VW Transporter out of a ditch without problem and then drove the 300 miles home, so there seems to be some 'meat' left on the clutch still. All fluid levels ok

Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.
