VW Golf mark VI 1.6 TDi (2009, Diesel) - Which oil for top-up ? - ah207

The car is due for a service in May. But I have noticed the oil level is on the lowest notch as indicated by the stick. I would like to do a top up - and then in May I can get a filter+oil change done together. Just two questions:

1. I'm a bit confused - web searches seem to suggest the 5W-30 as best option. Its very expensive - but is it still a good choice even for a top up ?

2. Assuming no oil at all in the reservoir, what is the maximum capacity (in litres) ?

Much obliged.

My old boss always reckoned oil was a minor expense compared to engines etc, that idea has been good enough for me too.

Eurocarparts have usually got some offers going, incl free delivery, on the website for many oils (lots of other suppliers too), if you buy 4/5 litres you'll have enough for the next few years of top ups, its always much more expensive to buy by the litre.

You can use their oil search selector, or use the one on Millers oils website to make sure you are buying the correct spec.

If you or a friend have a Costco card they are selling Castol Edge 5W-30 for about £26 for 4 litres.

This is the best and correct oil for your car and much cheaper than a new engine!

Seriously, if you have no oil in the sump you will need more than a top up, an engine re-build would be a better idea.

Your handbook will tell you the correct oil spec. VW's have many depending on what type of engine and what service regime has been set. If you are unsure best to conatct your local delaer.

Depending on the milage you do, I would get the car serviced now and not bother with the top up.
