Just been told my MX5 has failed its MOT as the front offside brake is sticking.
I'm worried that my mechanic should have already spotted this, as I took my car in just 12 days ago because the brakes weren't working (barely any resistance on brake pedal, plus swerving when braking).
On that occasion, they found that the rear driverside brake caliper seal had gone and I basically had no brake on that wheel and it was too dangerous to drive (they knew I was about to do a long motorway journey). Caliper replaced (they said it was actually pretty rare on a MX5), and I was given the car back. I asked if the other brakes were OK, and they said yes, it was only that one caliper that had gone.
My question is whether the sticking brake should have been spotted then? He has avoided giving me a direct answer, and said he will call when he has looked at my car personally, and will give me costs etc before fixing.
- If it is now a serious enough safety issue to fail an MOT, and 12 days ago I went in saying my brakes weren't working, should they not have checked for all brake problems and not just stopped when they found one problem (ie the caliper)? - Is it possible the problem with the sticking brake has suddenly appeared over a few days, and they were fine 12 days ago? - Or is sticking brake something that would only ever be spotted in an MOT test, and not when they are generally checking for brake problems?
NB - 1.8 Sports / 53 reg / 47,000 miles NB - Generally been very happy with mechanic, used for 10 years, trust him (but...)
