Hi all,
I just had my 60 plate avensis tourer in for its 40k service. All good except it needs new pads back and front, however it also needs new discs back and front!
At 40k !? Have I found the avensis Achilles heal?
Has anyone else had similar experience

Typical for a modern car, indeed many are being replaced far sooner than that.

You can judge for yourself how bad the lip is, indeed judge for yourself how worn the pads are too, pads down to 30%?, thats probably another 10k miles at least, measure the discs and ask on a Toyota forum for min disc requirements..doubt that will be stated in the handbook.

Should be a simple, and cheap, enough DIY job if they really do need replacement, then keep schtum..;)

Does it need them now, or is it just the opinion of whoever serviced it?

I replaced all the pads on my ten-year-old car last year. The discs were above the minimum thickness, but won't go another ten years at their current rate of wear. I reckon I'll replace the car before the discs are worn down to their minimum.

Well they are saying the front pads are 95% gone and back 99% gone. I can live with that , it's the discs I can't believe. The dealership is saying they are lipped if I read correctly. The car is under warranty still so I mead to be careful

Ask what is the new disc thickness, the minimum specified thickness and what is the measured thickness of your discs. If the discs are more than half worn, then there probably isn't enough material left for another set of pads. They'd still be okay for a while with new pads, but the discs would probably wear below minimum before the pads wear out. A dealer would be failing in his duty if he allowed you to get into that situation.

As for pads, they should be replaced once the friction material thickness falls below 3mm. Some manufacturers are specifying 2mm with recent improvements in manufacturing, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. At this thickness you are using the "interlayer" for braking, and the performance of this layer falls off rapidly with wear. The interlayer changes the chemical composition of the pad from that which is suitable for providing braking to that which is suitable for adhering the pad to the backing plate.

To add, I would generally expect a pair of discs to be good for 2 sets of pads and need replacing with the third. Other factors, such as overnight corrosion may affect thsi though. 40k is a shade soon but not too bad.

My Saabs discs went through 2 sets of pads and then needed new discs at about 50k as an example. I was fine with that.

If it does need them try Ebay.

When I had my Avensis I got a full set of Brembo front discs and pads for a reasonable price.

After 40K I'd be surprised if they weren't.

As Cyd{P} says, ask for more information.

On the cruze, (yes I know different car) at the service at chevrolet dealers pads at 2mm sir, but parts not in stock, so asked manager at K.fit who is an old mate who measured everything and pads at 3.19 mm, but did a dull brake service and pads fitted for £65, main dealer would have been 30 mins labour + vat + parts.(about £150)

The surprise was that the kwikfit pads were gm/delphi with the GM partnumber on the box and the pads.
