Vauxhall corsa C 1.0l - Horrible rattle on startup - Tommk4

I get a terrible rattleing noise for the 1st second or two upon startup. Mostly when cold, it isnt too bad when it's been warmed up.

The car is high miliage (nearly 130k) and its the 3 cyl 1.0L engine and it gets very regualr oil changes. No smoke.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Could it just be hydraulic tappets running for a second without oil or is it something more serious?

Tomorrow morning get the bonnet up and listen intently as someone starts it up for you. Then come back and try and describe the noise and what area of the engine it's coming from (in particular, the top end or bottom end).

It could be tappets or a variety of other things. You are using the correct oil type and grade?

I've had a good listen and it definatley seems to be a top end noise, obviously its difficult to describe the noise but I once had a ford CVH with a dodgy worn out tappet and it sounds a bit like that but a more frequent ie faster noise.

Any ideas how much a new chain would be?

Would it be of any use if I video'd it on my phone and put it on youtube?

I would say more serious.Very likely to be the timing chain on its last legs.Needs to be looked at sooner rather than later.hth

It sounds a bit tappety the whole time but I think they all do, you can definatley tell the noise I'm on about when I start it nthe first time.

sounds like a normal 1.0 to me just a bit of oil drained away from parts mines the same

Drain the crap oil and replace with 3.5 litres of 5W30 synthetic.
