>>Whatever you do don't show the pictures of it being off roaded ,that's a cruel thing to have done to a good old car !
Whoops! I haven't quite got the hang of potobucket. How do you post a picture without opening the whole shebang?
;>)

Four hundred quid?
You old rogue !

"plus a pressure wash under the bonnet with a degreaser applied first ."
Is a pressure wash under the bonnet a good idea? I have heard otherwise.
|
Wrap a carrier bag or bin liner around the distributor cap ,ecu etc ,only do with the engine running and hot ,Spray the electrics with wd40 or similar afterwards.
I've done it many times without problems ,I always tell buyers I've done it ,none seem to object .
Whether its right or wrong buyers buy cars that are shiny and clean ,it's seems to motivate most more than a good service history !

I like to see a clean engine bay .

I like to see a clean engine bay .
Personally I prefer to see one that's tidy and got the correct amount of grime for its age rather than degreased and pressure washed. Seeing one that's freshly squeaky always makes me wonder what it was that made it so awful that it required that.
Same as I also like to seen an interior that's genuinely clean rather than recently bulled up and shining with silicone products on the plastics.
i.e. "well cared for" beats out "recently valeted to within an inch of its life" every time.
|
I agree, that's why I've hosed down the engine bay, vacuumed and cleaned the interior to within an inch of its life. Missus moans it's the only time my cars look smart!
I haven't painted the tyres either.

Don't expect an easy sell. Old Korean cars are about as popular as pox in a brothel. Last year I sold some bits on e-bay, the chap came to collect them in a Proton Wira saloon (I know they not Korean but close). "W" plate and one elderly owner prior to him buying it. Long MOT, 1 week tax. Only 33,000 miles approx and other than a tiny patch of surface rust on the drivers side front door window frame the body was perfect, just needed a polish. Interior was as new, just needed a vacume. He had just bought a nearly new Astra since he had started a job in London and felt he needed a newer car for his weekly commute of 140+ miles each way.
He had tried to sell the car on e-bay, Auto Trader, local rag, etc and other than a non-paying buyer on e-bay not a single enquiry. He was taking it to the scrappie that afternoon, been offered £150, needed it out of the way. He had been trying to sell it for £200.
All it needed was 4 new tyres since the ones on the car were probably the originals and were severely cracked, they were a small size thus cheap. Was tempted to buy it as a winter runaround but the last thing we needed was another car.
I paid as much for total rubbish back in the 70's, really sad to see a decent car just thrown away.

A friend bough a one owner Kia Rio 2003 for £500...
|
The pride should bring £500 ,simply because its a fiesta size runabout car ,cheap tax ,insurance and reasonable on fuel .
It's what buyers are looking for ,larger cars like the wira and rio are harder to sell .
Having said that I'm just about to try and sell an old shape 2002 vectra 2.2 Sri 150 ,that I took in part exchange ,just 69000 miles ,new mot .im going to offer it at 995 ,and will take a part exchange . Quite good on fuel currently averaging 30 mpg .and very smooth to drive .Surprisingly just group 10 insurance .
Because I take part exchange and offer a very limited 3 month warranty ,I would expect to sell it quickly ,w,ell see .Theres a massive demand for cheap cars now .
For members who are interested I will let you know how I get on .
Any thoughts ,or better still Sri buyers !

Sounds like good vaue, tony g.
Just out of interest. is it the old Cavalier shape Vectra or the later 2002 onwards one?
Not that I'm in the market for it...............
|
Cavalier shape ,in theory it should be difficult to sell ,large old car etc .howevever every time I have a car for less than £1000 it sells quickly ,so we,ll see.
|
the kia pride if its advertised correctly, would make decent money on ebay motors.
|
tony g was right.
I tried it in a few free-ads type places and got a couple of nibbles, so last night I put it on Autotrader.
Sold it this afternoon for the asking price, £400.
|
Well done bt .
Selling an old friend like that must have been like selling one of the kids !
Did you shed a tear as it was driven away ?

Little sad to see it go, missus compared it to selling the pet dog.

I think instant results like this will depend a bit on where you are selling from (I mean in the UK, not which back street) ? West Midlands or Yorkshire has a larger catchment than mid-Wales, say.

(For members who are interested I will let you know how I get on . )
Just an up date on the Sri ,I had half a dozen calls ,but the heavy snow made it difficult for buyers to get to see the car .As soon as the snow cleared a young lad from Sheffield came ,paid £950 and drove the car away .So a good result
.Almost
.It was a lovely old car and a pleasure to drive ,but the young guy who bought it was only interested in the traffic lights Grand Prix .Even on the test drive .
I don't think the poor old car will last long when its treated like that .

Funny that - I sold a Pug 205 to a young lad from Sheffield last month. Is there some scheme going on? And how does a private buyer just 'come and drive away' without arranging insurance first?

They just don't bother registering it to their name, anything cheap for cash that's got tax and a bit of mot on it that will run for a year will sell, then if they get caught it's still cheaper than taxing moting and insuring like us mugs do.

Actually to give the lad his due ,he'd organised an insurance quote before he viewed the car .He then rang his insurance company on my phone to put the insurance in place before driving away .
Driving without insurance is one of my pet hates ,If he had wanted to drive away without insurance I'm not sure that I would stop him ,however I certainly wouldn't encourage it .
