Welsh mum gets stolen Mercedes car back from England and man arrested, thanks to £35 device - Wales Online

I don't know what the range of one of these is but could it find a kid 100 miles away let alone a car? Great result though

They use Bluetooth to link to other Apple devices on the network. So as long as it can find these within about 30 feet it will feed its location back to the “owner” even if, as here, they are many miles away.

We put airtags in pur hold luggage last year as we had a connecting flight,

Tracked the cases all the way into the hold of the final flight. When we arrived in the US two cases arrived quickly, but one was missing. I could see it wasn't far away so showed a staff member and on jnvestigation it hadn't been put on the luggage belt which was on the floor below us.

they feed the location to icloud via nearest iphone, which is encrypted you then log in to find the item, pity android don`t do one, though the phone can be tracked

Android is a piece of software they don't make hardware....however Samsung do make one for their Galaxy phones.

I bought a rechargeable tracker from Amazon. You just have to insert a pay as you go sim card, put £5 credit on it and install the app.It keeps track of my van and also tells you where you have been that day and how many miles you've done. Its magnectic so it fixes somewhere under the bonnet or boot and works really well.

I have never had to top up the sim card and i have been using it a couple of years now.

Heres the link to Amazon

Android is Google & they most certainly do make hardware (Pixel etc.). There is a rumour of an equivalent device to an Airtag from Google but you already have devices like Tile as well as Samsung 's SmartTag.

TV programme last night where a Range Rover Sport was stolen. Airtag on board and police found it in 15 minutes parked up in a residential street, no doubt left for colldction later.

Thieves had ripped out electronics in the boot which looked like an attempt to remove a different tracker.

What program was that? might be worth watching on catch up.

I read that airtags alert the thief to thier presence after several hours, so limited utility.

That Vodafone one is interesting, but I suspect car thieves have kit to detect GPS and cellular devices. Crime seems very organised these days.

I saw on YouTube that after steeling a car some gangs will leave it somewhere that isn't associated with them for a few days, so that if it has a tracker it doesn't lead the owner to the thieves.
